This points out a few things which you fail to mention like 1) the base didn't grow much because people rolled off and churned - FYI since you don't get the information but retention isn't getting better, in fact, it's flat or down 2) if revenue is outpacing marketing spend (efficiency) you fail to mention why that's happening which ties into why there's a higher ARPU. GLP-1s are the most expensive medication they offer. They can attract less people but still charge more because it's priced way higher. That's why your marketing efficiency looks good even though it's a function of what's being sold (i.e. product mix) 3) "on-demand sexual health has low customer acquisition cost" is total bullshit and you don't know what you're talking about. It's actually not cheap at all and has been going up since COVID. That's why $LFMD even called that out in their conference call about the paid search rates going up on those key word bids and why $HIMS has pivoted to becoming a pseudo pill mill and pushing people to take daily compounded ED meds so they can smooth out their retention and forecast more predictable revenue. This $HIMS chart is so misleading and disingenuous. It's cherry-picked data to make things look as bad as possible without proper context. And the conclusion is wrong. You do not divide quarterly marketing by NET subscribers. It's ridiculous. Let me explain why: Hims is PURPOSEFULLY allowing their on-demand sexual health clientele move off the platform. Two years ago, all anyone could say about hims was that they had no moat because they sold knock-off Viagra and anybody could do that. They have used the brand awareness to pivot towards personalization and raising the quality and stickiness of their user base. On-demand sexual health has low customer acquisition cost (CAC), but also low lifetime value (LTV). They can switch to another provider very quickly. Hims is intentionally moving to people who will have much higher LTV, and to get those people you have to pay higher CAC. What you, as a shareholder should worry about is LTV/CAC, not sales and marketing per new net subscriber. Let's use a simplified real-world example: Paul is a subscriber for on-demand sexual health for $20/month. It cost $150 to acquire Paul as a customer. Paul goes on and off his subscription when other providers get cheaper, and hims has to keep marketing to him to keep him as a customer. He usually stays for around 10 months, so they pay $150, he makes them $200 in revenue. Paul's CAC is $150 and his lifetime value is $200. The LTV/CAC is 1.33. Fred needs consistent monthly testosterone treatment, and will for 5 years. Fred pays $150/month. Hims happily pays $2000 to acquire Fred as a customer, because $150/month for 5 years is $9000. His LTV/CAC is 4.5. Would you rather have Paul or Fred as a customer? The obvious answer is Fred. Let's say hims let's 9 Pauls leave the platform in Q3 and signs up 10 Freds. Their new subscriber growth is 10 but their net subscriber growth is only 1. Paul Cerro would say: THeY PaiD $20,000 fOR OnlY oNE nEt SubsCRIbeR!?!?!?!? This is by design, and it's the right thing to do, they are letting their less valuable subscribers churn and replacing them with significantly more valuable clientele. But how do we know that's what's actually happening? What is the data we can actually look at to see the true trend? That's easy. Look total marketing efficiency, which is the sales and marketing as a percentage of revenue. If marketing efficiency is getting better, it means you have to pay less every new quarter to do more revenue. If total marketing efficiency is getting better, it means that LTV/CAC is increasing over time. Guess what? Hims used to spend 50% of their revenues on marketing when sexual health was their primary business. It is now down to 39%. Marketing efficiency is getting better. The pivot is working and everything is going exactly as planned. Long HIMS. I added more shares today.
