@alexwickham And the media, you included, are trying to act like this matters, lost in an infinite maze of semantics and nuance that you'll never get out of. And STILL you persist with the notion that it's anything to do with Starmer's future. Laughable. The media is what's losing trust here.

➡️ Cat Little is asked whether Keir Starmer should have been shown the UKSV vetting decision by Olly Robbins "It's a judgement for the individual decision making authority, in this case the Foreign Office" So she is +not+ agreeing with the PM that he should have been shown.

@BethRigby I'll give you one guess as to who comes out of this mess the worst? Civil service - not good. Politicians - worse. Media - the worst. That's you... all of you trying to bring down a government based on semantics, nuance and, frankly, nothing at all. You're a joke, the lot of you.

Cat Little contradicts Robbins. Tells MPs that in her view the cabinet office did NOT suggest that Mandelson did not need vetting. She also says “it is my view due process was followed”. Says Robbins wouldn’t release summary doc from UK security vetting & had to get it direct

The media isn't getting it - they are embraced in a death-spiral with politics. The more the media creates and feeds on the daily psychodrama that it has got used to, the less politicians are trusted and the less the media is trusted in telling us about it. They don't see it.
Phil Jones@Phil_Jones01

Journalism in this country particularly political journalism is dead. They’ve killed it off with their irrational and unprofessional behaviour. The political witch hunt of @Keir_Starmer is absolutely corrupt. It is gaslighting the UK. It is like they’ve all been infected by a mind eating virus that is dooming their publications, their profession and their careers. I want political news, but I’m not buying effluent and currently they are all polluting political debate. It is offensive and it is corrosive and it is not serving democracy and the Fourth Estate sadly is twisted, corrupt and perverted in the UK. You are fired @guardian subscription stopped. I’ve subscribed and bought it every day for over 40 years. Done!

@KevinASchofield All you're doing here is confirming the problem. It IS the media's fault, you ARE part of the problem. Not the ONLY problem, but your inability to see the media's pivotal role in things damns you. Politicians of all stripes are not trusted, nor are the media - join the dots.

@KevinASchofield The British media's constant advertising of Reform is working. Personally, I am disgusted with the media that they decided Labour had to go from the moment they won the election. We don't live in a democracy anymore. Thanks for playing your part. You must be proud.

@donmcgowan The media is locked in a death-spiral with politics. The more they try to destroy Starmer (and others) in their desperate hunt for psychodrama content to fill their broadcasts and podcasts, the more they undermine trust in both politicians AND themselves. But they don't see it.

Our media fixation with Keir Starmer is becoming a literal drag on the country now. As I write this, I can already see the replies forming below, accusing me of being a Labour shill etc. but, believe it or not, I am not. Maybe it's worth setting this out — I have no party affiliation. None. I'm not 'on the right' … but that's as far as it goes. There are policies and people that I admire across the Lib Dems, Greens and Labour. Conversely, there are policies and people I am vehemently against within each of those parties as well. There are some decent Conservatives left but fewer and fewer in frontline politics and I can have excellent discussions with those moderate Tories that remain. Where my line in the sand is drawn though, as I'm sure you're all aware, is the far-right. Reform UK and Restore Britain. I have no common ground with their populism — I see through the propaganda. This doesn't mean that I think every member of Reform UK is a bad person, far from it, but I cannot rationalise their top-line bravado into credible politics. So, with all that being said, I think the witch-hunt of Keir Starmer is distracting the public from some far more serious crises. Since the very day Starmer took office, there has been an onslaught from the media; desperation to try and topple him and his principal team. This played out successfully with Angela Rayner, and they have been vicious and relentless pursuing Rachel Reeves. I listened to Paul Brand on LBC at the weekend continuously comparing Starmer to Boris Johnson in terms of sleaze. Have we collectively lost our minds? There is no other Prime Minister in history that compares to Johnson for scandal. The elephant in the room — Peter Mandelson. But is it really an elephant still? Clearly, Starmer should never have brought the Prince of Darkness into his team, that was a madness and severe failing of judgement. One for which he has accepted responsibility and apologised on multiple occasions. The vetting process appears to be, pretty much, a non-story, despite what Dan Hodges and GB News are shovelling out. So … we should be moving on. Shouldn't we? Kemi Badenoch and her famously robust judgement felt not yesterday, and spent more of her diminishing political currency by pushing Starmer with six questions at PMQs on the subject. She was met with a well briefed lawyer, that, in all honesty, made her look a bit silly for continuing her defeated line of questioning. While this continues to dominate the headlines, other far more crucial issues are being missed — we're going to run low on fuel soon, the cost of living is about to skyrocket, holidays will be cancelled imminently. But mainly ... the cost of living is about to skyrocket. We saw in yesterday's inflation rise that food is already moving upward, if Trump's ludicrous war in Iran continues, then we're all going to suffer the consequences. Surely, this is a far more pressing matter? One in which the government should be fully engaged in order to help protect the public — it's number one duty. It is very telling that Reform UK are spending very little time on the Starmer issue. They sent Lee Anderson out to raise this issue, for goodness’ sake. LEE ANDERSON. Farage is hyper focused on the local elections, safe in the knowledge that the media is obsessing over Keir Starmer, once again. He's making hay while the S*n shines on Labour. Jeez! This went on a bit, sorry, but it feels critical to me. We are being led around by the nose by the legacy media outlets. They smell blood in the water, but I really don't think the story is there. Not yet. And while the sharks circle, Reform UK are flying under the radar, ready to swoop on the local elections [sorry for the weird mixed metaphors — it's early!]. Have a lovely sunny day. 🌞

@BethRigby You know what looks terrible? So-called 'journalists' trying, every hour of every day, to turn nothing into a job-threatening something that it isn't. The lack of trust in politicians and journalists is inextricably linked, and only when you realise this will things improve.

Quick take: Back to the no smoking gun. Badenoch sums it up: "I cannot accuse the Prime Minister of deliberately misleading the House, but everyone can see what has happened here. This was not due process. Everyone knows the price of misleading the House. Will the Prime Minister finally take responsibility and go?" The Q on Thursday night was has the PM knowingly misled the House, that he's cleared of... BUT the impression it leaves: pressure to get appointment done, lack of attention to vetting, trying to rush it through, ignoring red flags raised before the appointment announced, putting Mandelson in and giving him case-by-case access to docs despite his background, the sacking & then blaming of Robbins. It looks terrible for a PM that promised to lead a government of integrity, accountability and stability

@joshglancy "The key question"? In establishing what? That this is an irrelevant dive into nuances of vetting process, which should only be of interest to extreme political science nerds, and not, under any circumstances, front page news? Westminster lobby disappearing up its own fundament.

If you've only been half-following, this is a forensic assessment of the key question: A form said Mandelson failed vetting. Olly Robbins says he didn't see form and was told it was a 'borderline' case, so found his way to yes. Why did oral advice and form differ so markedly?
Alex Wickham@alexwickham

The key point of process that determines if you believe Keir Starmer or Olly Robbins is right is still unclear this morning. The Cabinet Office - led by Antonia Romeo and Cat Little - say they discovered a UKSV document that clearly recommends against giving Mandelson clearance, with a tick in a red box for ‘clearance denied’. Bloomberg reported on Friday how Cabinet Office officials found this bombshell document on a secure portal while complying with the humble address and everything then developed from there. That document is the basis for Starmer’s claim that Mandelson failed his vetting and that he should have been told about this recommendation by Robbins. On the face of it, it does seem absolutely extraordinary that officials would keep this apparently clear written recommendation on such a high-profile appointment from the PM and cabinet secretary. That is why Robbins was sacked. But Robbins testified yesterday that he never saw this document. Instead he said he only had a verbal briefing with the Foreign Office security team that, in his words, only ‘leaned’ against recommending clearance be granted. He says they were then able to mitigate the concerns and approve Mandelson’s clearance. The Cabinet Office version of events and the document they’ve found, and Robbins’ version, appear to be inconsistent. Robbins’ contention is essentially that this is all a huge misunderstanding, that Mandelson did not fail his vetting, that the problems raised by UKSV were resolvable by him and he resolved them, and that he shouldn’t have been sacked. Robbins says any pressure from No10 did not impact the decision-making of him and his officials. Sources say the missing person in the story is Dr Ian Collard, a former senior FCDO security official. He is the person who had the verbal briefing with Robbins where they agreed they could mitigate the UKSV concerns, they say. Collard has since left the government. It seems Collard might be able to clear up whether UKSV did firmly recommend against Mandelson or only lean that way, and therefore whether Robbins was right to try to fix the problem himself with mitigations, or if he should have rejected Mandelson’s DV on the advice of UKSV and told No10 what had happened. If the UKSV concerns weren’t that grave and were possible to mitigate, Robbins has a good argument that he was right to do that and clear Mandelson’s DV without raising it up the chain, and therefore that he was unfairly sacked for trying to do what the PM wanted. If the UKSV concerns were more clear cut, as the UKSV document produced by the Cabinet Office implies, it’s harder for Robbins to argue he did the right thing. You’d have thought Collard and senior Cabinet Office officials will be called by the Foreign Affairs Select Committee to try to clear this up in the coming days…

@rogermosey @SophyRidgeSky It would, if she were pursuing something that mattered from someone relevant - she's not. She's pursuing something irrelevant, from someone who has no reason to know or have an opinion onwhat she's asking about. It's a classic attempt to get a gotcha, no matter how meaningless.

WATCH: This was a PM that promised to be different, but being forced to the Commons to explain away the Mandelson vetting scandal has thrown his government into crisis and raised real red flags over his own judgement. This scandal has hollowed out his No 10, set his government against Whitehall and left his already disillusioned MPs in quiet despair. There may not be a smoking gun today or appetite to move against him from MPs so close to critical elections, but it leaves an already embattled PM weaker still Film by @IzzyLosseff @JoshGafson1
