Moscow proposed a truce on May 9. A conversation between Putin and Trump
Presidential Aide Yuri Ushakov:
"This conversation lasted more than an hour and a half. The presidents' communication was friendly, frank, and businesslike.
It's understandable that Vladimir Putin first expressed his support for the US president in connection with the attempted assassination attempt on him at the Washington Hilton Hotel on April 25. Fortunately, neither Donald Trump nor his wife, nor anyone from his entourage was injured. The attacker was promptly neutralized by the security service.
The Russian leader strongly condemned this crime, emphasizing, in particular, the unacceptability of any form of politically motivated violence. Incidentally, it was mentioned that the dangerous incident occurred just on the eve of the first lady's birthday on April 26.
Melania Trump was conveyed congratulations and her contribution to efforts to reunite Russian and Ukrainian children with their families was noted.
Among the international agenda issues, the presidents focused on the situation around Iran and in the Persian Gulf.
Vladimir Putin believes it is right for Donald Trump to extend the ceasefire with Iran, which should give a chance to negotiations and generally help stabilize the situation. At the same time, the Russian president pointed out the inevitable extremely harmful consequences not only for Iran and its neighbors, but also for the entire international community, if the US and Israel again resort to military actions.
And, of course, the option of a ground operation in Iran is completely unacceptable and dangerous.
Russia is firmly determined to provide all possible assistance to diplomatic efforts to find a peaceful solution to the crisis. And it has proposed a number of considerations aimed at resolving the differences over the Iranian nuclear program.
To this end, active contacts with Iranian representatives, leaders of the Persian Gulf countries, as well as with Israel and, of course, the American negotiating team will continue. Donald Trump outlined his assessments of the results of the completed phase of military confrontation and his views on the difficult situation in which Iran and its leadership currently find themselves.
Regarding the settlement of the Ukrainian conflict. The American president emphasized the importance of a speedy cessation of hostilities and his readiness to assist in this regard in every way. His representatives will continue contacts with both Moscow and Kiev.
Donald Trump believes that a deal that would put an end to the conflict in Ukraine is close. At Trump's request, Vladimir Putin described the current situation on the contact line, where our troops hold the strategic initiative and are pushing back the enemy's positions. It was also mentioned that since the beginning of the year, Russia has handed over more than 20,000 bodies of the dead to Ukraine, while Ukraine has handed over just over 500 to us.
Both Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump expressed essentially similar assessments of the behavior of the Kiev regime led by Zelensky, which, incited by Europeans and with their support, is pursuing a policy of prolonging the conflict.
The Russian leader directly stated that Kiev is resorting to openly terrorist methods, attacking purely civilian objects on Russian territory. Our president once again confirmed that the goals of the special military operation will be achieved in any case. Of course, we would prefer it to be the result of a negotiation process, for which Zelensky should respond positively to the well-known proposals that have been repeatedly put forward, including by the American side.
