A specialist search team from the United States has begun a ten-day search in Southampton for the reported Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake, assisted by two specially trained detection dogs, K9 Yak and K9 Q. Searches will focus on the Gibbs Hill area, primarily at dawn and dusk when the species is most active. Residents in the Gibbs Hill, Lighthouse Road and Lighthouse Lane areas are asked to remain vigilant and cooperate if the team requests access to private property. If you see the snake, do not approach it. Move to a safe distance and call 911 immediately.

Download the Emancipation Commemoration 2026 Calendar now! This year’s theme, “Our Story, Our Strength,” explores how the history of enslaved Black Bermudian people and their descendants reveals a formidable power that endures to this day. In addition to events hosted by cultural organisations, groups and individuals throughout Bermuda, the Department of Culture is proud to host two signature emancipation events. Join us on Friday, July 24th for “Black Enterprise in Bermuda: Trials, Tribulations, Triumphs,” an emancipation film telling the stories of Black-owned businesses in Bermuda. Next month, learn how a case involving enslaved Bermudians being illegally transported to another colony impacted the entire British Empire. Dr Neil Kennedy will discuss this case in the 17th Annual Robinson/Packwood Memorial Lecture, “Bermuda Bound: Tracing the Limits of Atlantic Abolitionism.” For more details of these and other Emancipation Commemoration events, download the full calendar at culture.bm. #BermudaCulture #EmancipationBermuda #BermudaEmancipation #EmancipationCommemoration

Thank you, Dame Flora Duffy. 🇧🇲🏅 Today, Bermuda celebrates one of the greatest athletes our island has ever produced. Minister of Tourism & Transport, Culture & Sport, the Hon. Owen Darrell, JP, MP, said, “While her list of achievements is extraordinary, what has always stood out is the pride with which she represented Bermuda. Every time she wore our colours, she showed the world that excellence knows no boundaries and that a small island can produce the very best.” From her beginnings in the Iron Kids Triathlon to becoming Bermuda’s first Olympic gold medalist, a four-time World Triathlon Champion, six-time XTERRA World Champion, and two-time Commonwealth Games gold medalist, Dame Flora has inspired generations through her determination, humility, and excellence. Her impact extends far beyond competition. Through the Flora Fund, she continues to support and inspire Bermuda’s next generation of athletes. Thank you, Dame Flora, for an unforgettable career and for representing Bermuda with pride on the world stage. We wish you every success in this exciting new chapter. 💙💛🇧🇲
