tears, we got Gray, Sarr, Olusesi, and Bergvall all breaking out, but Lange & Co decided to shell out 40m in transfer fees and 400k per week for Gallagher & Palhinha

I have huge respect for coaches like Hansi Flick or Vincent Kompany.
They are willing to accept defensive risk in order to generate more attacking opportunities.
Their teams operate with short distances and high fluidity, constantly looking for dynamic superiorities much more than positional ones.
They are dealing effectively with the man-to-man pressing that dominates the modern game.
Naturally, this approach can lead to moments of disorganisation. However, they embrace it through aggressive counter-pressing, often creating an “all or nothing” scenario. They are willing to leave their back line exposed in 1v1 situations or, in some cases, even outnumbered to increase the chances of recovering the ball back.
This brave approach can also result in heavy defeats, moments where the project seems to collapse. But coaches like Flick or Kompany have strong personality, conviction and leadership, not only to implement these ideas, but more importantly, sustain them through difficult periods.

NEC Nijmegen are thriving this season.
A result of a superb and intelligent recruitment policy.
They are still going strong despite losing key assets such as Roefs, Verdonk, Hansen, and Shiogai in the past 10 months.
Signing other players like Başar Önal, Sami Ouaissa, Kodai Sano, and Noé Lebreton for modest fees has been a true scouting masterclass. ❤️

Over reliance on physicality and rigid tactical structure getting undone by teams who prioritise quality and decision makers on the pitch.
People say the game has changed. But the skeleton will remain.
It’s obvious.
IQ, technique and better footballers have more capabilities than teams who lean more into physicality.
If you have better players, and they’re more unpredictable, of course it’s going to be harder to play against than the ones who are
- worse footballers overall
- more predictable
- physically worse because they become so reliant on intensity and physicality but also don’t train correctly / enough in the week to make them robust enough to cope with it

Why do we think English sides have struggled in the UCL KOs then?

🇫🇷 Read recently that Senny Mayulu is dithering on a contract renewal at PSG.
If he became available I’d be all over that.
He’s one of the best pressing and hardest working players in Europe.
- Ranks in the top 10 Ligue 1 players for pressing duels
- 6th for possessions won in the final third (1.20 per 90)
- Won 70% of his 6.47 defensive duels per 99 this season
On top of that he has 10 G/As (0.50 goal contributions per 90).
He’s versatile, only 19-years-old. Has the potential to become a really special player.
