Zahra Rachid’s Arncliffe business, Travel World Sydney, was in dire financial straits when the 55 year old ripped off eight clients, some aged in their 70s, by taking payments for overseas trips but never completing the bookings with airlines. According to court documents, Rachid booked flight tickets upon request from a client then cancelled them without the person’s knowledge or permission and kept the refunded amounts. On some occasions, the victims only learned of the scam when they arrived at Sydney Airport to board their flight. After pleading guilty to eight counts of dishonesty obtaining a financial advantage by deception, her solicitor Mahmoud Abbas, arranged a plea deal on her behalf. She was sentenced to six months jail, which she has already served. Rachid, then walked free from the court.
