The #BattleofMons took place in August 1914. The following month, #ArthurMachen wrote The Bowmen story in which phantom bowmen from #Agincourt came to the aid of the British. So began the #AngelofMons myth. This waltz was published in 1916

At The #HeathRobinsonMuseum, we cherish letters from soldiers who communicated with Heath Robinson during their service. Though few responses from him survive, his replies often included uplifting pictures, bringing a touch of joy to those in the hardest times.#remembranceday

Last night I went to a lecture on the impact of the Hampton Court Conference of 1604. The lecturer brought along several contemporary documents including the Basilikon Doron of 1603. The original owner provided a brief index which may interest @indexers

@Beare1G Will do. We have a very good run of it at Mary Evans, which I dip in to from time to time. Now it’s digitised and on BNA makes it easier to find things (though I kind of like the randomness of just happening upon stuff when flicking through a volume).

Seeing as it’s #secondhandseptember love this article I’ve just found in The Strand magazine, 1906, about the savings fashionable ladies can make by hiring their gowns from an agency rather than buying! Which frock would you choose?

@lucigosling David Devant wrote several articles for the Strand Magazine between 1906 and 1924, including, in December 1912, his Reminiscences, which were illustrated by E H Shepard.

Magician David Devant, a huge celebrity during Edwardian era, performing his magic kettle act in Variety Theatre mag 1905. John Hassall created several posters for Devant including this - one of my faves (original owned by Magic Circle). Devant & Hassall both born in 1868.

Sorting out my spice trolley. Gawd. It’s chaos. So far 3 x Chinese 5 spice, 3 x fennel seeds, 3 x harsh masala, 3 x ground ginger, 11 x chilli of various types, daren’t even count up the cumins and coriander. .

52 years, 102,348 words, god knows how many subjects - hundreds. Just sent off final part of the most gruelling writing project I’ve ever signed up to. Put a fork in me I’m done. When recovered, I’m available for pub quizzes. Bit late for champagne on a Monday but what the hell.
