What is a “Manchurian Candidate”?
The term comes from Richard Condon’s 1959 novel (and the classic 1962 Frank Sinatra film). It described an American soldier captured in Korea, brainwashed by Chinese/Soviet handlers in Manchuria, then sent home as a sleeper assassin. Triggered by a simple cue, he’d kill on command—without memory or awareness—while rising to high political office.
The core idea: a leader who looks loyal but actually advances a foreign power’s agenda.
