Dick Vermeil said, "The number one concept is to make sure people know you care. If you want to win over a person, first you have to win over their heart." Leadership means doing more. 🔹Great leaders care. 🔹Great leaders connect. 🔹Great leaders influence. They know it isn't about their title or position, it's about their behavior, actions, and ability to work with others. Leadership is how you build relationships, set an example, and create a standard for performance. Dick Vermeil's 7 Common-Sense Principles of Leadership: 1. Make sure people know you care about them People won't fully give their best unless they believe you care about them. Your responsibility as a leader is to ensure those you lead understand how much you genuinely care about their well-being. Remember, people don't care how much you know until they know how much you care. So, make sure they know you care deeply. 2. Be a good example You set the standard as a leader and you are the example that people look to model. Your organization will not be what you are not. Every day, you have to be an example for how you bring energy, how you handle adversity, and how you show up to win. Never assume you are not being evaluated because people will always follow your lead. 3. Create an atmosphere that people enjoy working Make it a place where everyone feels a sense of belonging and connection. If people don't feel connected, they won't show up with their best self and that will be reflected in the culture. Doubt, criticism, and complaining will take over if people don't believe in the place they are contributing towards. Your culture is never static and it lays the foundation for the organization and the team. 4. Define, delegate, then lead You must have a clear plan in place for where you want your team to go. Define your goals, delegate responsibilities effectively, and then provide guidance and leadership. This structured approach ensures that everyone is working towards a common goal and helps people know where they're headed. People need to know what they are doing and they always need to remember the WHY of what they are doing. 5. Bring emotional and physical energy every day You set the tone every day with the energy and enthusiasm that you bring. It's contagious to others because it brings out your authenticity. When you have passion, the hard work becomes easier because you see the improvement and growth that it takes to get better. Teams respond to passion because it shows belief and commitment. It sets that example. 6. Build relationships You have to spend time connecting and building relationships with everyone. Deep, meaningful relationships are crucial in the more intense environments you might find yourself in. As you introduce your vision, values, and processes, this will improve buy-in and allow you to better relate to everyone. This unity and mutual care can leads to improved performance and long-lasting relationships. 7. Establish credibility by being sincere, believable, and trustworthy You have to be a person of character. Honesty and integrity are of utmost importance. Always be sincere in your interactions and communicate the truth. Never sacrifice your integrity because it is the cornerstone of trust. Hold people accountable and tell them the truth even if it is tough to hear. One of Dick Vermeil's favorite quotes, "Remember, if you have integrity, nothing else matters; if you don't have integrity, nothing else matters." - - - Follow @coachajkings for more content like this!
