✍️ The Hawthorn midfield and ruck dilemma for OR If Hawthorn fail to overturn Jai Newcombe’s 1-match suspension, they will start the 2026 season with a midfield trio of: Josh Ward Connor Nash Connor Macdonald From 2025, there will be no: Jai Newcombe ❌ Will Day 🤕 Cam Mackenzie 🤕 James Worpel 👋 So, what’s the plan? I would be shocked if Sam Mitchell gave a debut to Ollie Greeves. Henry Hustwaite, who had a few opportunities last season, doesn’t seem to be in the coaches current plans. The coach is going to have be creative. The likes of Sam Butler, Josh Weddle, Nick Watson and Dylan Moore will spend more time in the midfield against the Giants but none of them are “midfielders”, in fact, neither is Connor Macdonald. I expect Finn Maginness to play whether Newcombe is suspended or not. If Newcombe is suspended, is Maginness a midfield option to run with either Oliver or Callaghan? This will be an interesting watch, as he hasn’t played midfield or a 🔒 down role at AFL level since 2023. The current number one ruck Lloyd Meek also seems to be struggling with the new ruck rules. Many Hawks supporters will disagree, but I think Ned Reeves should play against GWS. His tap work is elite and he has improved his “around the ground” work. Kieren Briggs is not the type of ruck that will hurt Reeves around the ground, like an English or a Grundy type & he would definitely have the advantage over Jake Riccardi, the Giants #2 ruck. Whether Newcombe plays or not, the midfield will need every advantage they can get, even with Tom Green, Josh Kelly. Toby Bedford and Brent Daniels missing in the middle for the Giants.
