If you suffer from vertigo, skip Descent III (1999). For everyone else, though, it was a brilliant finale to the trilogy. As the mercenary “Material Defender” (a name I always found a bit odd), you help the Red Acropolis Research Team fight robots corrupted by an alien virus. The game delivered total 6DOF freedom, huge levels that were easy to get lost in, a killer soundtrack, a strong weapon arsenal, and even dial-up multiplayer - the full package if you will. Its cinematic cutscenes look dated today, but they added real atmosphere at the time and added greatly to the story. Critics loved it, yet it sold only about 50,000 copies. Interplay blamed strong late-90s FPS competition and limited marketing muscle against industry giants - and I think it's fair to say there could be some truth to that if you think what bangers were competing for players' attention (and budgets) in 1999.
