@Keith_Langlois NIL was in place prior to the start of the 2022 college basketball season. I could certainly see a touch more than three 2nds, but I don’t think you get to a 1st round pick value. Still a great piece of business by Trajan to get the swap, Huerter and off Ivey.

Fair, but NIL has changed equation. Players pegged to go in 20s now are a coin flip to come out. They can make more short term by returning to college and trying to improve stock. Doubly so this year as next year's draft is much weaker. So cost to come up this year is more.
BeetFarm19@BeetFarm19

@Keith_Langlois Not a first. Two years ago the Nuggets traded pick 28 and 3 2nds to move up to pick 22. So we are likely looking at about 3 extra 2nds, so still a very nice move.

@MrZaySanders @Keith_Langlois This year’s draft is certainly better, but most of that is due to the variance at the top of it vs 2024. A 1st is worth roughly 5 or 6 2nds. I dont think you will see that type of value (and you are saying a 1st plus more) to move up 7 spots in the 20s.

@BeetFarm19 @Keith_Langlois Two years ago was arguably the worst NBA draft in history. This years draft is very, very deep. It would absolutely cost a future first and probably more.

Update: Minnesota's win over Houston means the Pistons will pick 21st. That was a great bit of work Trajan Langdon did in the 3-team deal that netted Kevin Huerter, moving up 7 spots. To do that on draft night would have cost ... a future protected first, probably?
Keith Langlois@Keith_Langlois

A good night for the Pistons. Their 59th win ties for the third most in franchise history. The kicker is that Toronto's loss means the pick swap the Pistons got from Minnesota in the Kevin Huerter deal conveys. It was protected 1-19. Pick will now be 20 or 21.

@PensareBBall You are the one labeling him as a superstar, saying he’s a top 10 player in the game who’s better than Cade and same tier as Ant. Anyone saying he’s a role player is wrong, but so is anyone putting him the top 10 right now.

Name a player who won ROTY and made 2 All Star teams by age 24 who was a role player. You can say someone didn't become a SUPERSTAR.. Buck Williams, Ralph Sampson.. Some fell off. Steve Francis, Ben Simmons. But none of them were talked about like y'all trash Scottie.

@KuKhahil I was at the game. The crowd was hyped and lots of back and forth though 3 quarters. Dominant defensive effort to start the 4th, mostly lead by the bench unit.

I see this is a game I *have* to rewatch, I see Detroit pulled away in the fourth but looks like it was fun as hell until then.

@MollyJongFast It’s just hilarious (not really) that Kernen acknowledges Trump previously lied about Iran’s nuclear weapons being eliminated and now he completely trusts Trump saying they again had nuclear capabilities.

@Charlottean28 Not looking great so far. Boston beating NY would be good too since it makes it more likely NY needs to win tomorrow against the Raptors. Looks like Cleveland is already sitting a couple guys tomorrow against Atlanta.

One of my biggest goals as a media member is to earn an NBA award vote to help add some consistency to the system. I don’t like how narrative driven and inconsistent the selections have been

The Timberwolves had a surprising return in Orlando. Jaden McDaniels is back, hanging on rims and cracking jokes like he never left, a big development as the playoffs loom. Free read below 👇

@Charlottean28 Really need one of those things to happen by end of Friday nights games. If it doesn’t, then Wolves will likely tank last game and Hawks/Raps would likely have easy wins.

So we got scenario B tonight, and this is what it means Minnesota’s pick will fall somewhere between 19 and 21 Any Twolves win, Hawks loss or Raptors loss from here on out means the pick will convey to Detroit.
Keith Black Trudeau@Charlottean28

For tonight’s Minnesota pick watch, you want one of two scenarios If Minnesota wins, the swap is locked in, and you want Atlanta to beat Cleveland If Minnesota loses, you want Cleveland to beat Atlanta.

@KuKhahil I completely agree with that last point. If they don’t do something like that as well then the league won’t see much difference from how teams operate.

@BeetFarm19 I don’t agree with this, but if this is truly what they’re trying to accomplish they also need to get rid of how far you can fall If the 1st odds still can’t fall below 5, there’s still reason to tank. Make it to where they can fall to anywhere, if that’s what they’re trying

@MotorCityHoops Agreed on it being really important for Cade & Stew to get some games in before playoffs. Assuming Bucks trade Giannis, I’d be very interested in AJ Green. We have a proof of concept w/his skillset and he’s on a great contract.

@BrettSiegelNBA Now the question of whether this is good for the league overall, with how it hurts the bad team’s ability to get high-level players as a totally different conversation

@BeetFarm19 I get what you are saying completely, and yes, guys in the 9-15 range on the bench will get more run. But stars, high-level talents, and others won't be playing regardless.

Maybe I am wrong, but how does flattening the lottery odds for the bottom 10 teams stop tanking? So now, instead of a small group of 5-6 teams, you are allowing teams in the middle with either no playoff intention or wanting a chance at a top pick to lose. This won't work.

@BrettSiegelNBA Well, fortunately it sounds like we’ll get to see how it plays out next year. I’m more optimistic guys will want to play, and that teams will want to play most of their guys and build something for the following year.

@BrettSiegelNBA Some of that will still happen of course, but I think we will see much more playing overall from the normal rotation guys. Guys usually want to play, especially younger guys. Like the Wiz aren’t sitting Sarr games or limiting his minutes bc he might help them win too much.

@BeetFarm19 I can guarantee you that they won't simply because a lot of these guys won't want to play and the front office won't want to risk injury in a lost season.

@KuKhahil There will still be bad teams of course, but it’s kind of crazy that the Wiz aren’t playing guys they traded for or even young guys like Sarr bc he will potentially help them win too much.

@KuKhahil If the odds are flat for non playoff teams then there’s no incentive to finish as close to the bottom as possible. I think there would be a big difference in these “injury reports” we are seeing from all the bad teams who are purposely trying to lose to improve their lotto odds.
