The interesting thing about CPM's steep decline has been how its organization melted away in opposition in Bengal & Tripura (which one wouldn't expect from a cadre-based 'ideological' party). Worth revisiting this prescient Ashok Mitra diagnosis from 2007 mronline.org/2007/11/20/ash…

If correct, would be first time since 1977 that a Communist party government does not hold power in any Indian state. As late as 2010, Communists held power in three Indian states (Bengal, Tripura and Kerala).

After weeks of illness, injury, and hospital stays, we emerged to find ourselves facing a reality harsher than words can describe. 💔 Our small tent is completely empty; there's no food, no bread, no clean water, not even firewood to cook whatever we can find. We are all still suffering and desperately need proper nutrition during our treatment. Miral's jaw and nose are broken, Rahaf has severe pneumonia, and I'm a pregnant woman with severe anemia… All of this is happening under unbearable living conditions. Yet, the greatest pain is our helplessness in the face of our young children's hunger, all under the age of four. My dear friends, you were our reason for survival after God, and thanks to you, we got through those difficult days. Today, we timidly return to ask for your support once again. 😞 We desperately need just $250 to secure basic food and firewood for the next week. It may seem like a small amount to some, but for us, it means survival. Please, I beg you a thousand times, share our plight so it may reach someone who can help, and donate if you can 🙏 chuffed.org/project/179053…

A 14-year-old orphan in Gaza told me he wants to be a journalist. I asked why, expecting the usual reply about telling our story to the world etc...he says "because suicide is haram". Apparently he's not the only who made this decision for that reason. Congratulations world.

He's the guy who can make you know the difference between constipated, wannabe writers and the literal God of poetry. He can make you know the difference between shame and unsuppressed articulation of one's true feelings.

If you haven't read Mir, you haven't read Urdu Poetry at all. If you don't like Mir you lack taste in Urdu poetry. If you are unable to appreciate Mir, you clearly lack the aesthetic sense to praise great poetry. If you are unable to develop a taste for Mir, you need to read more

The Russian revolution is so inspiring because it’s like 7 months of the most annoying liberals on here being in charge and everything going to shit then the coolest guy in history owns them and sets up a system that puts the first man in space

After a completely manufactured display of 'remorse' over the desecration of a cross in the southern Lebanese village of Debel, Israeli forces are demolishing parts of the border town, bulldozing solar panels that supply electricity and power its water station.

Fun fact: in the 1974 BBC series 'Fall of Eagles', directed by John Elliot, some of the main characters were Lenin [played by Patrick Stewart] and Trotsky [played by Michael Kitchen]. What's more, the Lenin portrayed in the series often quotes the real Lenin from his 1904 work 'One Step Forward, Two Steps Back' during his conversations with Trotsky

It made me recall how right my mother was in saying that one of the strongest measures of a person’s true character is how they treat their immediate family and those less fortunate than themselves.
