My new paper, published in this year's BISM quarterly, deals with a Dutch report on Maratha invasions of Bengal. Some new stuff including a ship bridge built by the Marathas. academia.edu/104544771/A_Du…

Whenever I call a plumber or electrician, they never come in one go, it takes 2-3 days. And most issues aren't even that big. So I have decided to learn the basics myself, small electrical fixes, simple plumbing, and basic repairs. Worth learning?

Mahabharata as a movie would go insanely hard... betrayal, war, politics, dharma vs ambition… it has EVERYTHING. And yet Indian filmmakers keep playing it safe instead of touching the greatest story ever told.

@mkhanpasha Marathi already lost it slowly over the 20th century. Seems like northies are not far behind.

It seems as if Urdu-Hindi may lose nasalized endings in the next century or so. In Devanagari, Urdu script, & and Roman, I now regularly see “nahi” or “نہی”for nahīñ, & oblique endings like लोगो को for लोगों को. koi baat nahi 😉

The world works in funny ways. Let's take the case of linguistic proficiency. Tenali Raman was a scholar in Farsi. Rana Kumbha was very well versed with Telugu. The idea of Hangul is derived from a script created to read Tibetan, Mongol and Chinese. If we go by Aryan Invasion or Steppe Barbarian logic, Americas saw 143 migrations across Bering Strait. Sumerian is assumed to be an artificial pidgin of the local tongues of the era. Tower of Babel possibly referred to the fall of Nineveh. The world is known for such quirks.

@pathaksudh 6. Around 1920-22, it was mentioned in a book "Patwardhan Gharanyacha itihas" that the original copper plates which were used to block print the Bhagvadgita are in the Bharat Itihas Sanshodhak Mandal, Pune. But today they are not known. Gotta do some investigation. (n/n)

Yes it is the first printed version of Shrimad Bhagwad Geeta as is in Sanskrit, and perhaps the first printed Devanagari book too. There are two minor variations of the story behind the book (Mr Vasantrao Agashe's and Mr Kumthekar's). Would like to know more x.com/i/status/20397…

@pathaksudh 5. So the copy in Kumthekar's collection is not the only one known - just the most 'accessible' one for now. If someone does some fieldwork maybe they will find Rajapur copy and possibly others too...There is another interesting thing related to this. (3/n)

@pathaksudh 3. Both Agashe and Kumthekar have based their versions on A K Priyolkar's book "A History of the printing press in India". It's pdf is readily available on internet. 4. Priyolkar has mentioned the colophone but mentions a copy in the Vedapathashala at Rajapur (Ratnagiri). (2/n)

@pathaksudh 1. Bhagvadgita first ever Sanskrit book printed - probably true. However, Devanagari printing had already begun 2-3 years earlier in Serampore, Bengal. 2. I agree with Kumthekar's take. (1/n)

In many North Indian gyms, you will find that all gyms owned by Hindus have an idol of Shri Hanuman ji. And many of them have recently started playing only Hanuman and Bhairav related workout music. It's slowly in some sense turning into a neo-martial ritual. Its wonderful!

@Anmol_299 Partly true.

One thing I noticed is my Aaji always says ' मारुतीच्या मंदिराला गेला का ' It's always मारुती rarely हनुमान, whereas our generation almost always says हनुमान Maybe next generation will fully forget मारुती Maybe I'm overthinking

@arya_amsha Court language of Islamic powers in India was Persian. Mughal, Delhi sultanates, Deccan sultanates, and all other sultanates had Persian as their court language. As a result, Persian sources abound for every such dynasty. Plus there are Sufis. You simply cannot ignore Persian.
