@ramnathbabutj and I were discussing risk analysis yesterday. This was triggered by the recent tragic incident in Hyderabad, where a speeding car lost control on a flyover and fell on a pedestrian. The driver survived. The pedestrian did not. It led us to a deeper question. What does “safety” really mean? Take airbags. They are engineered to protect the occupant and they largely do that well. Their failure modes are predictable and bounded. If you limit the scope to the driver, the benefit outweighs the risk. But if you broaden the scope to include everyone around the vehicle, the picture changes. The same system that protected the driver was still part of an event that caused a fatality. Risk is not about predictability alone. It is about probability and severity. And it depends on where we draw the boundary of analysis. This is where systems like FSD become interesting. They are built on probabilistic models, yet they can be engineered to optimize across a much broader environment than a human driver typically does. FSD is engineering. And engineering, over time, brings safety. Ultimately, autonomy is not about perfection. It is about bringing engineering predictability to a world currently driven by a probabilistic human mind. @elonmusk @BendFlexRD @Tesla

Every cell in your body has mechanical properties — stiffness, elasticity, deformability. A cancerous cell behaves differently from a healthy one. An embryo's stiffness shifts as it develops. At @BendFlexRD, we've been building micro scale compliant mechanisms to explore this space — tiny biomanipulation tools that can hold, roll, squeeze, and pull a single cell and measure how it responds to force. The question we keep chasing: can mechanical signatures complement chemical assays in diagnostics? We don't have all the answers yet.
