Historical Photography Fun Fact 📸:
Today we are looking at the small story behind the famous 1878 "flying horse" photographs by Eadweard Muybridge:
Leland Stanford (the railroad tycoon and founder of Stanford University) bet $25,000 that all four hooves of a galloping horse leave the ground at the same time. Most people (and artists) thought this was impossible because it happens too fast for the naked eye to see.
Muybridge, a brilliant and eccentric photographer, set up a row of 12 cameras along a racetrack in California, each triggered by threads the horse would snap as it ran by.
The resulting sequence proved Stanford right, horses do fly for a split second. When Muybridge later projected the images in rapid succession using his "zoopraxiscope," he created one of the very first moving pictures in history.
