This was Yuliy Mamchur — commander of the Ukrainian aviation brigade in Belbek Air Base. In March 2014, his unit was surrounded. He was ordered to surrender the base. He refused. Then the Ukrainian servicemen under his command marched forward in formation carrying the Ukrainian flag — without firing a single shot. It became one of the defining symbols of resistance in Crimea. He was detained, but he remained loyal to his oath.
