Navsari Tales is my sixth book. It brings together stories that have stayed with me over time, drawn from places, people, and moments that feel familiar in different ways. Each one carries a certain closeness, the kind that doesn’t need much explanation. Grateful to have this out in the world. #NavsariTales #AuthorLife #IndianWriting

A warm and intimate read into Parsi life in Navsari by @BerjisMD. A tale of a world now gone. Books like these preserve the texture of society.

Met with Shri Berjis Desai ji, Member, National Commission for Minorities, at my residence in New Delhi. He also presented his book Navsari Tales: Bittersweet Fables from an Ancient Parsi Town, a thoughtful reflection on Parsi heritage and culture.

Near the Veraval coast in Southern Gujarat, in the historic town of Prabhas Patan, the first of the twelve Jyotirlinga-the Adi Jyotirlinga - is worshipped in one of the most ancient Shiva temples of India, Somnath, which is situated on the exact spot where the mythical Saraswati River merges into the Arabian Sea. Somnath, an integral part of India’s sacred geography, is the holiest of the Holy. Repeatedly raided and desecrated by Islamic invaders, most notably, Mohammed Ghazni, who invaded India 17 times and in 1025 CE broke the sacred Jyotirlinga into pieces. Modi learnt about the desecration of Somnath from his Hindi teacher who ran the Vadnagar Shakha of the Sangh. The story of Somnath brought tears to Narendra. Modi takes his trusteeship of the Somnath Temple, extremely seriously and devotes considerable time to it. He dreams of the gorgeously revamped Somnath temple becoming India’s Vatican. All these years, secularism was misconstrued as negation or sterilisation of history, appeasement of the minority, affirmative action in economic benefits and job reservations, feeble response to provocation from Pakistan, stifling political correctness, and allergy to Hinduism as a way of life. The Indian political spectrum will no longer be divided on this issue. This transformational change in national thinking will be attributed to Narendra Modi. From the Chapter Balance Sheet of the Mission. #ModisMission.

During his days with the Sangh, Narendra Modi had heard the recording, with great fascination, of a radio broadcast from All India radio station at Tiruchirapalli made by Sri Aurobindo on 15 August 1947, Independence Day, when the Sage spelt out five visionary dreams for India and the world. These were spiritual predictions of what he called Supra-mental vision, a higher form of consciousness. He called the Partition of India as something which would be undone, and India would be reunited, not by military conquest, but spiritual cultural reunification of the Indian subcontinent as Akhand Bharat. Never before had the English media so recklessly accused a government of complicity, despite much graver riots, including the pogrom in which thousands of Sikhs died in the aftermath of Indira’s assassination. The Marxist historian, Irfan Habib called this Delhi pogrom, as “mob frenzy” and the Godhra riots as a “pogrom”. Habib, in a preface he wrote to a book on Nehru, fondly recalls how Nehru, a friend of his father, dropped in at the Habib household in Aligarh, unannounced for lunch. From the Chapter, Gujarat no Nath & Agnipariksha. #ModisMission.

In January 2024, Modi inaugurated the Ram temple in a nationally televised ceremony. Before doing so, he took an anushthan for the successful completion of the temple. For more than 11 days, Modi slept on the ground without any mattress or pillow. He observed strict fasting with only warm water. For several weeks, he chanted Mantras for the removal of obstacles. This was in addition to his daily rigourous Sadhana and Kriya. From the Chapter The Return of Ram. #ModisMission

As a BJP functionary, Modi had, while criss-crossing Kashmir for two decades, developed extensive knowledge of the ground reality from the locals. He was a part of the three member BJP team in August 1992 to study the Kashmir situation. As the BJP’s national secretary in the 1990s, Modi was the election in charge of J&K. Modi realised over the decades that Article 370 had resulted in corruption, separatism, and lack of good governance in Kashmir. Narendra Modi’s approach to Article 370 was not only due to his ideology of “India First”, but also his commitment to bring good governance to the suffering people of Kashmir. As soon as he became Prime Minister, the Gujarat transformative model was applied to Kashmir. From the Chapter A Way of Life. #ModisMission

The signing of the Indus Waters Treaty led to an unprecedented uproar in the Parliament when opposition benches along with some Congress members, criticised Nehru “for giving away too much”. Nehru was described as an umpire in a cricket match. Nehru said that he did not understand so much fuss over a few buckets of water. Pakistan got exclusive control over 80% of the water by volume, that is, the three largest Western rivers and India only over three Eastern Rivers. From the Chapter Jai Ma Bhawani. #ModisMission.
