Through her novels, essays, speaking engagements, and advocacy work, Amy Tan (Ph.D. student ’74–’76) has contributed profoundly to her profession, her community, and the world. Her debut novel, “The Joy Luck Club,” transformed American literature by bringing Asian American narratives to a global readership. Beyond literature, Tan has served as an outspoken advocate for literacy programs, youth writing education, mental health awareness, bird and environmental conservation, and Lyme disease research. In 2025, The Bancroft Library became home to her archives, providing the university with an extraordinary record of her career and personal life. Charles Huang ’93’s journey reflects the promise of public higher education. After graduating from Berkeley, he worked in his father’s business and gained manufacturing expertise. In the dot-com boom, Huang and his brother Kai '94 launched RedOctane, which grew from a video game rental service into a well-known brand name in the video game industry. He is the co-creator of Guitar Hero, the best-selling video game in 2007 and 2008. Huang continually pays forward his Berkeley education. He served as a past chair of the UC Berkeley Foundation and co-chair of the Light the Way campaign. Beyond Berkeley, he serves on boards of directors and as an adviser to many startups, venture funds, and nonprofit orgs.
