It is with a shattered heart that I share that Hannah passed away this morning at 05:04. In a cruel twist of fate, she left us precisely one year to the day after her best friend, Gorby the lemon Doberman. I can only hope they are together again. At 02:00 AM, the doctors called saying she was going into shock and they were starting a blood transfusion. By 4:23 AM, they called again; she was on plasma and oxygen, and they told us they likely wouldn't be able to reanimate her if she crashed. They asked what we wanted to do, and we were clear: we didn’t want Hannah to suffer. At 05:04, the phone rang one last time. We knew what had happened before they even spoke. I am struggling to even type this and I likely won't be able to reply to messages for a while. I’m crying non-stop and I still see her face from when I had to leave her at the ICU. I want to believe they did everything they could, but I can't help but doubt everything right now. It feels as though those phone calls were just a way to justify their actions so they could ensure they’d be paid in full for their initial quote. I could be wrong, but I am struggling with very mixed feelings. To everyone who supported us and donated: thank you. Using the donations, I will try to have her cremated so I can bring her ashes home, though it is yet another expensive service. Every cent not spent on Hannah will go toward protecting my other dogs. I suspect she wasn’t the only one targeted by this poison, and I can only hope Hannah was the only one unlucky enough to be affected. I am still processing this while realizing I still owe the remaining half of the 870 euros for a single day of 'care', a balance I’m sure they will have the nerve to bring up the moment I arrive there in a couple of hours. It is a heartbreaking reality that while these dogs are our souls, to the veterinary industry, it is often just another invoice. Thank you for loving her and for helping me through this nightmare. This is all I can manage to say right now. I am so sorry I wasn't able to save her...

Hoy ha muerto Paco, mi perro y amigo. Nos ha acompañado 18 maravillosos años. Nunca olvidaré el primer día que lo llevé a casa, las miles de horas de paseo juntos ni su calor cuando me acompañaba para dormir. La vida es dura cuando transitamos estos momentos. Lo echaré de menos.

The heartbreak I’ve long been dreading has finally happened. My little soulmate dog has left her frail little body behind and is hopefully chasing rabbits on the other side. Maisie was adopted as a puppy because her previous owner couldn’t handle her crazy, energetic, stubborn, noisy little personality. But I fell in love with her instantly. I was only 21 and Maisie has been in my life through all of the twists and turns; house moves, relationships, heartbreaks, job changes. The past few years, she’s been my constant companion and the gaping hole she’s left in my life is unimaginable. I hope I never stop finding her little hairs on me. 💙
