In this week's Bassanese Bites, @DavidBassanese examines the growing local recession risk, with Q2 GDP potentially negative on a 50-50 chance and unpacks the Budget's ill-considered capital gains changes and their unintended consequences for investors, small businesses and property markets. Globally, he covers the ongoing US-Iran peace talk progress, rising bond yields and what the Fed's PCED inflation print could mean for rate expectations. What are the investment implications of the CGT changes? There are over 10 million Australian adults who hold an investment outside of super, but only 2.2 million property investors and around 840,000 discretionary trusts. In sheer numbers, the CGT changes touch far more Australians than the negative gearing or trust measures. For everyday investors, what matters now is understanding the implications and the structures that stay tax-efficient. So, what do the Budget's tax changes mean for investments? The first 12 days of the Iran conflict alone are estimated to have cost the US around US$16.5 billion, a reminder of how quickly modern warfare depletes equipment. In response, the US is planning a sharp increase in defence spending, with a proposed budget of around US$1.5 trillion. If approved, it would represent the most significant year-on-year defence budget growth in history. betashares.com.au/insights/defen…

A small but dynamic part of Australia’s equity market, technology companies have delivered periods of significant outperformance against the broader Australian market and global technology peers, alongside sharp drawdowns. Despite the current drawdown – and what some have dubbed a global ‘SaaSpocalypse’ in software – Australian investors are continuing to allocate to the sector. The ATEC S&P/ASX Australian Technology ETF has attracted $193.7 million in net inflows so far this year to 15 April 2026, already exceeding the $156.5 million gathered in 2025. betashares.com.au/insights/navig…

Last quarter we unpacked why the AI rally was on notice, discussed the outperformance of markets outside the US heading into 2026 and explored the implications of the expected divergence in central bank policy. In Q1 of 2026 these themes have evolved significantly. Questions around the AI rally shifted from concerns of overspending to fears of disruption, ex-US outperformance gathered speed before the Iran war reversed those gains, and persistent inflation coupled with an expected energy price shock from the Iran conflict saw the RBA hike rates twice during the quarter. betashares.com.au/insights/equit…
