There's this woman in her late 60s I've been dressing both legs for after she suffered severe burns in a fire accident late last year. She was admitted for a while before she recovered enough to continue her dressings as an outpatient. Every time she came for her appointment, after I finished dressing her wounds, she'd quietly slip some money into my hand as a token of appreciation. But I always refused. I've made it a personal rule never to collect money from elderly patients. If anything, I'd rather be the one giving to them. But one day, Mama insisted. "Gba," ( take it)she said. It was 5k. instead of arguing with her again, an idea came to my mind. I opened an Opay account solely for her gifts. I decided that every money she gave me would be saved untouched. For the next six months, that's exactly what I did. This morning, she came for her doctor's review. New drugs were prescribed, and she needed more dressing materials. Her total bill came to almost 132k. The moment she heard the amount,I saw the worry on her face. She went quiet. I smiled and said, Mama, don't worry....Ema binu...just to calm her down...I don't know if I'm correct o I quietly checked the balance in that Opay account and I said to myself that thank God this money is coming in handy today. It was a little over 120k. I walked her to the pharmacy and paid for everything...with the same money she had been giving me all these months. mama just stood there in shock. She used to call me "omo Igbo" because she couldn't pronounce my name and whenever she mentions that, everyone knows she's referring to me. Today, she looked at me with tears in her eyes and said, "Omo mi...oshey..." and I responded oshey mama mi 😂 just to let it flow. She held my hands, prayed for me in Yoruba, and cried almost the entire time. I kept wiping her tears even cattarh join 😂... Until I realized my own eyes had started watering too. Before she left, I gave her the rest of the money and added some money for her as transport fare back home. Never knew she's a widow until today. No be small drama today o YOLO.

It can be really painful to be unlucky sometimes. I was at the hospital today caring for a close relative who is receiving treatment. I stepped out of the ward briefly to buy something, and that was exactly when an NGO arrived to distribute diapers to mothers. From what I heard, each mother received about 5–6 large packs of diapers. Even some people who had only come to visit patients got some. Meanwhile, I have a 9 month old baby who uses about 4–5 diapers every day. I couldn't help but ask myself, Why did they come at the exact moment I stepped out? Sometimes, missing an opportunity by just a few minutes really stings.
