Prev. research has highlighted the importance of preventing lameness causing lesions from developing in the first place, as once developed, cows are at an increased subsequent risk!

The digital cushion functions to protect the foot when standing and walking (like the cushioning in a pair of trainers), when the digital cushion is thinner, less protection is provided and cows were more likely to display or develop sole haemorrhage or a sole ulcer.

Prev. research identified conflicting patterns of digital cushion change over a lactation...is the digital cushion thinnest during early lactation or at calving? We found that these different patterns are actually dependent on farm!
