@natwexler @Stephen_Sawchuk Reading and writing are not separate constructs. But because they’re tested separately they’re taught separately. In reality nobody is competent at one but incompetent at the other.

@Stephen_Sawchuk So glad you’re raising this question Stephen. Writing is both incredibly difficult and potentially hugely powerful as a lever for learning. Writing instruction doesn’t get the attention it needs & deserves.

so, folks who are working on structured/explicit early reading / 'science of reading' -- where does writing fit into this work? I know it must, but not seeing a ton written about this. Any ideas where to look?

It's great that more & more colleges are going ACT/SAT optional. But what safeguards ensure that admissions decisions aren't tilted towards students who DO submit test scores versus those who don't? 1/2 npr.org/2020/06/12/875…

ACT/SAT have a lot of organizational incompetence owing to lack of competition. Both are lumbering and inflexible, so when trouble starts all they have are half-baked patches instead of nimble pivots. @valeriestrauss #standardizedtests #acttest #sattest

Standardized test prep plus emphasis on skills over content are to blame for dismal NAEP results in history, civics, and geography per @natwexler. Add to that the shift in ed toward creating workers rather than citizens. #edchat #standardizedtests #400d234b6a7a" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">forbes.com/sites/nataliew…

Amid accelerating climate change, political/social upheaval. and rampant disinformation, less than 25% of US 8th graders are proficient in civics, history, and geography. We haven't equipped them for the challenges they'll have to face. #civics #history nces.ed.gov/nationsreportc…

Can’t blame anyone for trying, but it was a mistake to think the sudden transition from regular to virtual schooling would be successful. This experiment shows that distance learning is its own thing, not just a remote version of school as usual. theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/…
