PSG’s fascinating system. The right side builds (Hakimi–Doué–Vitinha). Doué connects between the lines. Kvaratskhelia as left-sided outlet. Dembélé floats high and finishes.

Monchengladbach did really in the opening period of the first half to bait Hoffenheim to press forward before creating overloads and tensions. Hoffenheim regularly could not lock on man-man tightly and quickly enough due to the distances certain players had to cover. Thus, Monchengladbach would use this surplus to break through the Hoffenheim press. As a result, they would have more space to attack and do so with pace, which would lead to dangerous situations. Thought this was very well set-up by Polanski. The full match breakdown is available on the @BetweenThePosts website for subscribers to read. I wanted to share a snippet of the article that I wrote for @BetweenThePosts, covering the PSG - Bayern Munich game (link attached below - free to read). For PSG's opening goal, I thought that were a few important details worth delving into. The first concept is the idea of decompressing the opposition defensive block, as @Jon_Mackenzie calls it, to create space between the lines. As seen in image 2, Doue is able to receive between the lines since Bayern's block has been decompressed having been attracted forward. PSG managed to do this by recycling the ball at the back until Bayern jumped up, which they knew would happen. Then, we come to the below-beyond movement by Kvaratskhelia. It results in Kvara going against Stanisic's flow, as @PaulMcG8 would refer to it, when Doue makes the pass. That movement is timed so well. He simply goes beyond to attract before making a run beyond to attack. It then leads to an isolated 1v1 from which Kvara does brilliantly to cut in and score. A well-worked and executed goal. On a side note: I poured a lot into this article to try and do justice to the game's quality - genuinely one of the best matches I've ever seen. I'd highly appreciate if you guys could give this a read (it's free, by the way) and provide feedback. It's an in-depth 2.7k+ words report. Hope you enjoy it. 🔗betweentheposts.net/paris-saint-ge…

I've been very impressed by Hoffenheim's performances this season and thoroughly enjoyed following them. One of my favourite teams to watch as their games can be quite entertaining. Ilzer has also done a massive job to take a team from 15th to a fifth-place finish - narrowly missing out on Champions League by just one point. Nevertheless, taking them to the Europa League is still way beyond what many thought Hoffenheim could achieve at the start of the campaign. Ilzer's playstyle is very interesting. He relies on intensity and physicality during in and out of possession phases. That's why Hoffenheim ranks at the top of certain metrics that illustrate this point such as distance covered and PPDA (passes per defensive action). This translates into locking on man-man in high press situations while utilising an active block when defending in the mid/low phases. With the ball, they attack directly and do so quickly. A lot of risk is encouraged in their possession play. For 2026/27, I'm interested to see how Hoffenheim evolve as I don't think that they can necessarily persist with the exact same style throughout the season. The high physicality demands can be maintained when you don't have European football to manage. Further, I'm not sure if Hoffenheim will be able to afford enough squad depth to maintain their intensity. If they try to do this (maintain their style), I'd predict a significant drop off in league performances and results. I say that because maintaining their intense playstyle while not being able to match the physical requirements will severely expose Hoffenheim's at least two of their main weaknesses - being played through when they defend in an active block and rest defence situations. Thus, I'd expect Ilzer to foresee this and make certain tactical tweaks to their style while still trying to sustain the identity developed this season, which has also brought success. Anyway, I want to end on a more positive note. What Ilzer and Hoffenheim have achieved this season is truly commendable. I hope that this turns out to be the start of a journey for the club to establish themselves as one who can compete and qualify for Europe regularly. Wishing them the very best.

Parma - Roma analysis is up, I discuss: - Roma leaves Valeri free on the transition. - Dybala fits into left-sided dynamics: runs from Hermoso/Wesley + Koné in forward line. - Parma threats from wide access on the counter. - A thrilling conclusion. betweentheposts.net/parma-as-roma-…

Bournemouth, Brighton and Brentford in 6th, 7th and 8th. It feels more like the new norm than an outlier now. The Premier League's got some really well-run clubs.
