The answer to this is really Ari Aster’s EDDINGTON. “The weirder things get, and the longer we live in them, the more normal they become. But something huge is happening right now, and we have no say in it.” boxd.it/2BG

Question for the group: has there been any great art about Covid? Any incredible literary novels or films? I can't think of anything off the top of my head but my cultural knowledge is not limitless.

Controversial: Peter Jackson's money grabbing tendencies disguised as love for Tolkien started back when he was directing The Hobbit, if not earlier. The Hobbit didn't need a nine hours long trilogy that resulted in it being bloated with unnecessary fillers and CGI action scenes

@m_stormwitch I'm not going to root around, but they're different things? It's hardly the worst WB thing they're doing even this year.

@BeyondGraves I explained what the harm is in other tweets. We need original stories (we need to see other part of the story get adapted, like RoP is doing), nostalgia sucks. And this doesn't come from a genuine interest in the universe,

It's been a minute since I read any of this but the tldr is that the studio (iirc) said 'if you don't do this, we'll just fire all of these people, and write it off'- I dont' remember offhand if that's 100% or me just summarizing an article from a while ago, but there's SOME reason for him to have stuck it out. Those movies suck but at that stage in development it would have just left a ton of crew out of work and tied up with it. There's something about the union below this section but I'm at work so idk.

@BeyondGraves Again, no one was pointing a gun at his head. Guillermo Del Toro stepped back, he could've done the same.

@m_stormwitch Why do we need an excuse? RoP, while controversial, performed okay. Colbert is regarded as basically an expert on it, and if I had to guess, he's producing- the chapters that they're adapting are supposed to be kind of cool, it could be fun? Like, what's the harm?

@m_stormwitch I'm not defending them- I hate those movies, but it was textbook development hell.

@LayOnbedL @DiscussingFilm I appreciate your desire to shut your brain off and just enjoy something, but even if you were going to do that- there are better books, better movies and better franchises.

It's a little far off from 'separate the art from the artist'- because Rowling has tried to do things past Harry Potter, and the sad truth is she's not capable of reaching those heights again- a children's book. She's hilariously very fixated on gender ideology, which is a strong choice for someone who chose to publish under a pseudonym. What do you want me to review, the book she wrote as Galbraith? Do you want to talk about where that name came from? Most people should have grown out of Harry Potter by now, and this new project seems... at best, mish-mashy-y. But it'd be like if OJ Simpson writing fiction where he makes killing a woman a plot point- it's going to come up.
