bts has done it again. i knew the song brought me comfort the first time i heard it, but this is why i love when they add visuals—bcos the storytellers they are, they’re never done telling the story with just the song. i think what’s so beautiful about the merry-go-round symbolism is that it feels like a natural evolution of hyyh. youth is often portrayed as turbulent, painful, and uncertain. the darkness was something you were trying to survive. but with merry-go-round we understand something different: the darkness never fully disappears. “i wish i could tell you that it’s over.” life moves in cycles. darkness and light, joy and grief, hope and fear, beginnings and endings keep returning. yet despite that, the ride keeps moving. you keep moving. what the mv gives you is sure darkness will follow, but also no one rides alone. the members keep meeting each other at different points on the ride. jin enters the circle while taehyung leaves it. someone is arriving while someone else is stepping away. someone is finding their footing while someone else is facing maybe a difficult season. and yet none of it is framed as a tragedy. it’s presented as something deeply human. bcos that’s life. we don’t all struggle at the same time, and we don’t all heal at the same time either. sometimes you’re the one being held up. sometimes you’re the one doing the holding. sometimes all you can do is meet people where they are while the ride keeps turning. the comfort isn’t that the merry-go-round stops. it’s knowing that when the darkness comes back around, you’ll find each other again. and somehow, together, you’ll make it through. you never walk alone. 💜
