The Karnataka government’s decision to allot houses to illegal occupants who encroached upon government land at Kogilu Cross is nothing but an act of political appeasement, following remarks made by the Kerala Chief Minister. While genuinely eligible poor beneficiaries who followed due process are being ignored, benefits are being extended to illegal encroachers for political reasons. Both the Government of India and the Government of Karnataka must first conduct proper verification of identity documents and thorough background checks. If such actions are encouraged without scrutiny, it will set a dangerous precedent where anyone can occupy government land, wait for demolition, and eventually be rewarded with a house.
