When the family member needs help to protect themselves against their alcoholic & to survive them & keep their own sanity, that , is when they usually take themselves there. The support they get there is without measure.

Have you ever been involved with a group or organization that made you feel like you were part of a cult? What was your experience like?

@morningtroll @alittlebitculty would love to talk to you about this. I was raised in Al-anon and it still feels iffy, esp the pressure I’ve felt to rejoin as an adult. Did not find the meetings helpful.

@alittlebitculty Yep, Nar-Anon and Al-Anon. It really helped at the time, but when I left, the harrassment was nearly Scientology-level.

@alittlebitculty as an adult it was Kundalini Yoga (I stayed on the fringes) and the fanclub of an underground musician/producer who created complicated and at times hostile parasocial relationships with his fans. Cultic dynamics pop up everywhere and I was groomed for it tbh.

@alittlebitculty I was raised by my parents in Shambhala Buddhism. As an adult I am learning the founder Chogyam Trunga Rinpoche had a $40,000 cocaine habit and was a sexual predator. The podcast Uncoverage about CTR by Una Morera was a heart breaking and intense listen for me.
