As many of you know, I’m critical of Islam, just as I’m critical of all religions. But today, just a few miles from where I live in San Diego, three innocent people were murdered at the Islamic Center of San Diego in what authorities are investigating as a hate crime. I’m disturbed, angry, and heartbroken for the victims and their families. Muslim Americans, like everyone else, deserve to live without fear of being targeted for their faith. Violence is never the answer. What also deeply unsettles me is that the shooters were reportedly just 17 and 19 years old. We have a serious problem with violent radicalization and alienation among young men in this country, and pretending otherwise is not helping anyone. If we actually care about preventing tragedies like this, we need to start having honest conversations about the culture, media ecosystems, and extremist rhetoric shaping young men before more innocent people die. Enough is enough.
