For the record, Yogi Berra was not really known as a great hitting coach, just the opposite. But with all the data hitters have to process today, I keep coming back to Yogi's famous line: “I can’t think and hit at the same time.” Sometimes the hardest thing in baseball is keeping it simple.

ARMCHAIRM GM - Is Joshua Báez on the block? That is the kind of deadline rumor that makes sense, even if #STLCards fans may not love hearing it. Báez is one of the more fascinating players in the organization because his value cuts both ways. On one hand, the right-handed power is very real. You do not hit 30 home runs in a season by accident. That kind of production gets attention, especially from organizations looking for controllable power in the upper levels of the minor leagues. The bat speed, strength and damage potential are all there, and in a Cardinals system that badly needs impact, that matters. There are people who would rather see him in St. Louis than see him mentioned in trade rumors. I understand that. The big-league lineup has had too many quiet nights, and Báez brings the one thing this roster has lacked far too often: thunder. But this is where the conversation gets complicated. Báez is not a finished product. The strikeouts are still part of the profile, and when a player is going through a rough patch at Triple-A, other clubs are going to use that in negotiations. They will point to the swing-and-miss. They will point to the volatility. They will argue that he is a risky asset. That does not mean his trade value has collapsed. It means his value is complicated. In some ways, this may be the highest his value will be before he has to prove it in the Major Leagues. Teams love power. Teams love upside. Teams love controllable bats who have not yet reached their final form. And 30 home runs will get a player noticed. But once a player gets to the big leagues, the mystery starts to disappear. If he hits, the Cardinals will not want to move him. If he struggles, the market changes quickly. That is the gamble. If the Cardinals believe Báez is part of their next winning core, then keep him and give the kid a real opportunity. But if another club still sees him as a premium power prospect and is willing to pay for that upside, then the Cardinals at least have to listen. Not because they should be shopping him just to shop him. Not because they should sell low. But because right-handed power has value, and volatile power prospects can sometimes bring back the kind of pitching this organization badly needs. That is the question. Is Báez too valuable to move? Or is this the moment when his upside still carries maximum trade value? For me, I am not moving him for a rental. I am not moving him for bullpen depth. I am not moving him just because his strikeouts make people nervous. But if he is the centerpiece in a deal for a controllable starting pitcher who fits the Cardinals’ next three or four years? That is a real conversation. Báez is not a throw-in. He is not spare parts. If the Cardinals put him on the table, they better be shopping his 30-home-run power ceiling, not discounting his current slump.

Yeah I know, I was around for a couple that year. My point is the general humidity is a massive culprit in depressing power. Even Old Busch wasn't very giving. Even the greatest power hitter I've ever seen, who set records for the longest hr in a bunch of stadiums, didn't hit those same kind of hrs at Busch. He still had no problem hitting hrs tho. I remember the 80s and early 90s, if people think the power numbers are bad now.....wooh boy.

Big Mac played in Busch II and he was gone before this stadium opened in 2006. I would suggest that there is a reason, Big Mac Land is where it is. For the record, I was in the press box for #62 and for such a historic home run, you are right it did barely clear the wall. But that wall scrapper did not make the moment any less surreal. Seeing McGwire come back up for his next at-bat with “62” on the scoreboard is something I will never forget.

@RayMileur1 @flynavy73 I'm also convinced thats why so many of these guys end up going through slumps where they just pound the ball in to the dirt, bc they've been taught to lift, and the change ends up leading to ground balls.

@RayMileur1 @flynavy73 Yeah, even back with Big Mac, he had mammoth 500ft hrs all over the league, none of those came in Busch. It was a lot of line drive 375 shots 😅. Albert might have been the perfect hitter for New Busch tbh

@flynavy73 @RayMileur1 Line drive hitters are generally a good fit for Busch, even before BPV, the humidity in STL creates drag, and hitter who can make good contact can cut through the air. Guys who rely on getting under the ball will have most of their hrs die in the outfield

@JuiceCosby @kyler416 If you look at the last couple of drafts they've focused on more hit tool guys. The power guys have either been around a while or came in through trades.

@kyler416 Why all our OF prospects go shit BB to K ratio. I get that’s baseball now but to this extreme? No it’s not look at the draft. Those with contact/pitch recognition questions but had more power than others. Went well after the playes who lacked some power but have good hit tools

@STL_Stats_Facts I've thought this for a while. Unless the deal is a really good deal, QO after the year and get the pick. If he sticks around another year, even better. Maybe hes better next year, could trade him for even more, or we'll be in serious contention. Either way I'm good.

My bold take with Dustin May is that i still wouldnt trade him at the deadline without a good deal. It's his first season healthy and I think he will be a lot better in the future if he stays healthy. His stuff is still so good and I'd like to see how he finishes the year. And at worst, they could also give him a QO next year and get a good pick if he does leave.
