Worth noting that loyalists were totally silent on the issue of immigration as late as 2022, which is when Irish people in the working class, traditionally republican area of East Wall in north inner city Dublin began to mobilise on the street against mass immigration. The anti-immigration street protest movement later spread to other towns and villages across the 26 counties, escalating into riots and confrontations with riot police in 2023 and 2024, most notably in Dublin City, Coolock and Newtownmountkennedy. It was only after all of this that English people began to riot against immigration following the Southport stabbing, and this response was likely inspired to some degree by the anti-immigration protests in Ireland, which had been covered extensively by conservative English media and which provoked calls to “be more like the Irish”. It was only at that point that the loyalists in Ulster, seeing English people riot, began to get active. I believe that one reason why Catholic communities in the north have been so silent on this issue as opposed to Protestant ones is that while the working-class Protestants are plugged in to the zeitgeist of their cousins over in Britain, working class Catholics in the north feel far more disconnected to their cousins south of the border. Partition has impacted them psychologically far more than they would like to admit.
