Rajat Patidar and the short ball: The two dismissals vs GT, MI have triggered discussions around his back of a length and short ball game. SR against 8m+ deliveries from pacers in last 3 seasons: 2024- 180.8 2025- 100.0 2026- 242.1 He's attacking them a lot more (getting more top edges too, but it's a pay off that's been worth it). The Mayank over was well countered, he got on top of the bounce. The problem essentially comes when the ball arrives later/faster than anticipated or when there's extra bounce. The two dismissals explain this 👇 Arshad dismissal: Earlier in that over, he pulled a short delivery (10m+) for six off Arshad. The dismissal ball was less than 10m and instead of the pull, was met with his customary pick up shot, which found the top edge. This pick up shot off 8m+ length has contributed to 60% false shots for him. The Bosch dismissal: This essentially was an effort ball from Bosch. The data says the bounce he got on that ball is higher than the bounce he gets on an average off similar lengths. The extra bounce resulted in the top edge. While there's risk associated with his pick up shots, the trade off is minimal as he still smashes them at a very good rate. Because he does not have a very natural pull or hook (it's more of a variation of the pick up itself), he tends to top edge some of those, especially when the bounce and pace off surface varies.

Rajat Patidar’s IPL 2024-26 data exposes a weakness that could become a massive problem in a T20 World Cup in Australia. 🧵👇 Patidar has been excellent against spin in the IPL, with fast hands, clean hitting, and aggressive intent. The dismissal map tells the full story. 📉 Most dismissals: • 5 wickets from back-of-length outside off • 4 wickets from good length outside off • Multiple dismissals against short bowling around the channel The dot-ball data is even more concerning. Against short balls, back-of-length pace, and hard lengths into the body, his dot-ball percentage rises sharply. This means he is neither scoring nor rotating strike consistently against pace pressure. This isn’t random, it’s a pattern. Instead of overpitching, teams push Patidar onto the back foot, forcing uncomfortable horizontal-bat shots. Especially in Australia, where boundaries are bigger, bounce is steeper, and fast bowlers hit the deck harder. A batter who gets stuck against pace quickly becomes a liability in the middle overs. Every team would attack him with the same plan: hard length into the body, outside-off channel, with deep square and fine leg in play. Patidar currently looks reactive, not dominant, against bounce. IPL runs alone cannot guarantee World Cup success. Australia exposes technical weaknesses brutally fast. Once teams identify discomfort against bounce, there’s no escape from sustained short-ball pressure. Rajat Patidar is a quality IPL batter, especially against spin. But based on IPL 2024-26 data, his struggle against short-pitched bowling makes him a risky pick for a T20 World Cup in Australia. However, he has struggled across seasons against high pace (>135 kph). The 125–135 kph range has been his sweet spot. His numbers against sub-125 kph pace were good from 2022 to 2024, but have dipped since 2025.

Sufyan was expected for first 6 games, with AMG joining later for back end & knockouts. However, with MI out of the IPL AMG could now arrive as early as game 4. AMG’s MLC contract may also force an early departure meaning he could end up playing just 4 games if he joins straight after IPL. Sufyan is also part of the WB camp & in contention for 🇦🇺 ODIs, creating potential overlap for both players.

Excited for this pairing in the T20 Blast for Derbyshire Falcons, if both are available together. Mickey’s nailed it. Excellent phase coverage & mystery. AMG in the PP & Sufyan through the middle.
