@Empty_America Strictly speaking the Drexels were German and the DuPonts were French Huegononts. The WASP distinction gets a bit messy though because t the Roosevelt’s are grouped in with their Anglo-Saxon neighbors.

Study up on the Drexels, a super elite "Catholic WASP" family that actually produced a Saint (Katherine Drexel).
Some of the Duponts were also Catholic.
This was sort of a thing among the mid-Atlantic elites (as opposed to New England).

@Rho_die @glamdemon2004 @paulhoti2 Very striking phenomena led to that. Protestantism took a real beating from “higher criticism” and other variants of skepticism of the traditional practice. Many Prot. academics chose the liberal side of the question, and basically critiqued their denomination into oblivion.

@glamdemon2004 @paulhoti2 It’s a very old phenomena. There’s a good book about 30 something rightwing intellectuals in the 60s-70s: only one was a traditional WASP Protestant. Most were Catholic or Jewish.

I’m anything but anti-development by disposition, yet it’s an absolute nightmare in South Jersey. Every new build is harassment architecture. Our environment is being consumed by sprawl. Our roads were already bad enough. The cost of living is out of control

It happens a lot; you become Catholic expecting one thing, and they give you something very different. Then you find out why, and you really start wondering what is actually going on. What really is true and isn't. It yanks you out of the Matrix & leaves you gasping.

What are the most remote "localities" in the lower 48 where a person could plausibly buy a home and live? I can think of Elk City Idaho and Beaver River NY, Jarbidge NV is also often mentioned in these conversations. What do you think?

This made me look up what J. Adam’s specially thought and this subject. Very nuanced take from his later years (1808). Not exactly pro-Caesar but he wasn’t blind tot he excesses of the Republic that would bring about its downfall

What the proper historiography should be is not necessarily what the Founders believed. Caesar was an epithet to the Founders. The best Anti-Federalist essays were written under the pseudonym Brutus. If Hamilton used “Caesar” instead of “Publius” in The Federalist essays the Constitution wouldn’t have been ratified. They didn’t see the late republic as healthy and acknowledged the decline due to corruption and the loss of civic virtue, but they imputed noble intentions to those opposing Caesar and believed their goal was to restore the republic to past glory. Rome was a cautionary tale about the fragility of republics, the need for civic virtue, and the susceptibility of republics to degenerate into tyranny.

@Monocarp_ St Mary’s Basilica in Alexandria to clarify. The Basilica in NE DC (the big one) probably also does a good job. That whole neighborhoodhood has a cool 7 churches tradition as well

If you add up the population of each of these metro centers it’s about 10 percent of countries population. The elite/heartland geographic divide isn’t always a useful measure

@ChadowskiIsBack There could very well be a Mormon issue but I think in this instance these women are held as normative of the Mormon experience and that paints an inaccurate picture of them as a group.

I mean this is not as any specific disrespect; but the Mormons are not Christians and their contemporary societal beliefs reflect that.

This sounds cutting until you realize the Gaelic Irish have a millennia of taking foriegn products (and people) and making them more Irish than the Irish.
