It used to be that IRL social requirements demanded confrontation and accountability - because you usually met ppl through friends or in a third space in your area, it was likely you would encounter them again, and they at least had your personal info (phone number). That type of pressure forces people to develop actual social skills and think through their impulses, such as to cut and run, even if their only motivation is just self-preservation.
