PLAYER SPOTLIGHT — BRENDAN KRUEGER Since Zack Haines took over as Head Coach in 2019, the High Point Men’s Soccer program has been on a steady upward trajectory. With a high-tempo, attacking style of play and a savvy use of the transfer portal alongside a focus on recruiting local domestic talent, the Panthers have gained national attention. This upcoming season is shaping up to be a pivotal one, especially for Brendan Krueger. The senior midfielder has firmly established himself as the team’s No. 10 over the past few seasons, and he took a major step forward last year, recording 6 goals and 8 assists. As a technically sound playmaker, Krueger thrives in the attacking third. He often stretches the opposition’s backline before dropping in to receive the ball, which is a movement that is hard to track, even more so when you consider his ability to mix it up and make runs in behind. One of Krueger’s biggest strengths is his ability to find space in the zone between the opponent’s midfield and backline. In High Point’s expansive 4-2-4 shape in possession, this area is critical, and he consistently exploits it. His sharp passing and keen eye for the final ball make him a constant threat, especially in transition. He also brings a calming presence when games get stretched, showing composure that comes with experience. An underrated aspect of his game is his relentless pressing. Krueger doesn’t just contribute with the ball. He’s equally committed without it and sets the tone with his work rate and intensity. When you add in players like Jefferson Amaya, the reigning Big South Defensive Player of the Year, mainstay central defender Lukas Kamrath, transfer forward Daniel Lugo and rising sophomore midfielder Koven Johnson, there’s a blend of experience and emerging talent.
