Gunfire on his escorts at the airport: Public humiliation for former Somaliland President Muse Bihi after defying Egypt!! In a farcical scene straight out of a movie, the man who openly challenged Egypt in favour of Ethiopia – former President of the breakaway region of Somaliland (Land of the Somalis) Muse Bihi Abdi – suffered a humiliating public insult today when Hargeisa police opened live fire on his bodyguards as he tried to enter Egal International Airport, leaving two escorts with serious injuries, according to circulating videos and local sources. Bihi, who lost the election last November to Abdullahi Mohamed Irro, was attempting to travel (most likely to the UAE), but police blocked entry on a judicial order linked to corruption charges and the killing of dozens during the violent suppression of protests between 2022 and 2025. Shots were first fired in the air as warning, then directly at the group. Bihi was eventually allowed to board alone as an “ordinary citizen stripped of all privileges”, while his escorts were detained amid chaos captured in these clips. Bihi, former commander of the Habar Yunis militia and leader of the Habar Awal clan, was the one who signed the controversial MoU with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in early 2024, granting Ethiopia a port and naval base in exchange for recognition of Somaliland’s independence – a deal branded “the great betrayal” by Mogadishu and which enraged Egypt, which saw it as a direct threat to the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam and Red Sea security. In his most recent interview, Bihi admitted that Ethiopia had “succumbed to international pressure” (from the African Union, the Arab League led by Egypt, and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation), and that the agreement “collapsed under threats to move the African Union headquarters from Addis Ababa”. Today, the man who bet on Ethiopia against Egypt is being publicly humiliated in front of his own people and the world’s cameras.
