Ethiopia was never colonized. For much of its history, it was one of the poorest countries on the continent. Meanwhile, Vietnam was colonized by the French, devastated by decades of war, and is now on its way to serious economic prosperity. If colonialism were the answer to why Africa is poor, Ethiopia should be rich and Vietnam should be broke. Neither is true. Can we please retire this excuse?

We need local infrastructure built for our reality. That’s why we’re building @ambalay_maps, starting with local landmark-based geocoding and routing for how Ethiopians actually move Visit: ambalaymaps.com
Ambalay Maps@ambalay_maps

In Ethiopia, people don’t always navigate by street names We say: “near Bole Medhanealem” “behind Edna Mall” “around Mexico” That’s why we’re building @ambalay_maps Local Landmark API geocoding, routing & delivery intelligence built around how 🇪🇹's actually describe places

@TigerskunkGames @magattew Then we mostly agree My point is simple: studying history is not complaining. A country can take responsibility for its failures while still being honest about external pressures that shaped its path

@BinyamDele @magattew I am not insulting anyone here, just stating the facts. And yes, I concur, both things you name are factors. Yet my point is, a lot of other countries had to overcome these again and again as well, and don't complain.

@332ck12ihm @elonmusk Maybe 😄 but let’s not outsource Ethiopia’s entire history to Starlink. The real point is simpler: Ethiopia’s independence should not be used to minimize colonialism. Resisting empire also came with invasion, pressure, interference and a heavy cost

@TigerskunkGames @magattew Insults aside, I’m not denying internal failure I’m saying serious history can hold two truths at once: internal responsibility and external pressure both matter

@TigerskunkGames @magattew Calling history “victimhood” is how people avoid discussing history Ethiopia has internal failures, yes. But invasion, imperial pressure and destabilization were real costs, not just “mingling.”

@BinyamDele @magattew Every country on earth is and has always been affected by other countries mingling and commercial pressure. It doesn't help to put yourself into a victim role.

1/2 Millions of Orthodox Christians feel increasingly insecure, unheard and underrepresented. Whether those perceptions are fully accurate or not, they are real What concrete actions will government take to rebuild trust with these citizens and ensure

The question is: why do so many citizens feel increasingly unsafe, unheard and unprotected? Ignoring that question will not make it disappear

You don’t have to believe there is a conspiracy to recognize there is a serious problem. 1/2 If Orthodox Christians are repeatedly being killed, displaced and seeing churches attacked, trust will inevitably erode The question is not only who carried out the violence. #Arsi

A widespread and horrific attack targeting Orthodox Christians and churches is happening in the Oromia region, East Arsi zone, Aseko woreda since May 31, 2026. Local residents have informed me by phone that so far 49 people have lost their lives, and they fear that more than 280 people whose whereabouts are unknown and who cannot be reached by phone may have also been killed. The residents stated that OLA (Shene) militants carried out the attack and mentioned these armed groups had previously attacked an area called 'Teleta Gabriel' more than seven times. What makes the current situation different is, they said, is that militants from Merti woreda, Fentale, Kereyu, and the Itu area all gathered together, numbering approximately three thousand. Crying and screaming in panic, residents report that these militants came to the Aseko woreda and completely burned down Biyo kebele, Teleta Gabriel, Kufte, Medhane Alem, and the surrounding areas. Residents say the attacks have now spread to Irecha Michael, Sunte Maryam, Lencha Oda, Kwas Dire, Arba Kela, Weranbus, and various other places. They stated that, so far, not a single government force has entered the area, and the militants have laid siege to the surroundings, preventing anyone from escaping while carrying out a massacre. This area is Addis Ababa Mayor Adanech Abebie's birthplace; perhaps she even knows some of the deceased, or studied or worked alongside them. Let's assume that unlike what we see in the rest of the world, that is going to the scene immediately to calm and comfort the public was impossible due to the ongoing attacks. But when such a horrific attack is committed in her birthplace, why did she fail to simply say 'rest in peace' and condemn the act? What about other officials and security forces? Why have the country's defense forces, police, militia, air force, and other forces been unable to prevent an attack that has been going on not just for hours, but for days up to this very moment? The situation in this country is sometimes exhausting. When the people cry out for rescue, these days they plead to the media rather than the government. Yet, when the media delivers this information to the public, it is the media itself that ends up being insulted and persecuted by both the public and the government. Anyway, writing this gives me a bit of relief. However, the condition of the citizens I spoke to... the crying, panicking, and screaming... is a tragic reality that will never be erased from my mind. May their souls rest in peace!

Couldn’t sleep last night because of a typeface idea. So I spent today building this experimental Ethiopic display typeface using simple geometric shapes. Still rough. Still needs work. But not bad for a single day.

@FanosMarkets Ethiopia still has a window: - more centralized system - existing digital rails (telebirr) - reform momentum The real question: Can they replace P2P fast enough with something better? If yes → reset If no → underground wins This isn’t the end of P2P. It’s a race:

🇳🇬 Feb 2024: Binance delists Naira P2P 🇪🇹 Apr 2026: Binance delists Birr P2P Same playbook. Same IMF pressure. Same parallel rate problem. Nigerians know how this movie ends. The question is whether Ethiopia is forced to watch it again or rewrites the script. Let me explain what is happening in Ethiopia 🇪🇹 right now🧵

Trading with the Ethiopian Birr (ETB) will be suspended on the 15th May. Your funds are safe, and you can still access your account. We’re working closely with regulators to support Ethiopia’s goals and hope to resume trading soon. We’ll share updates as soon as we have them. Thank you for your patience.
