Not really an overstatement to say that the test of a free society is whether or not comedians can make fun of the country's leader on TV without repurcussions.

OK, coauthors finally let me post the working paper Why doesn't police reform work? Because police depts can't credibly commit to their end of the bargain (doing more/better/riskier work in exchange for more $) It's an institutional problem, not staffing problem Link in reply

No matter how you slice it, US police officers are safer on the job and paid way more than other countries' police The critical question isn't more police vs. less police. It's why are US police paid so much while doing such little police work? From my paper w/ Mickey & Ziblatt

My plan to revive American manufacturing is to: raise the price of inputs like steel, aluminum & copper; create shortages of rare earths; invite retaliatory tariffs; cut R&D; raise borrowing costs by blowing out the budget; and to cover it all in a thick cloud of uncertainty.

Profiting off the office - by itself- is so corrupt. But the buyers could be CEOs, Russian oligarchs, Saudi princes. We have no idea. It’s all secret. That makes it the biggest corruption scandal in the history of the White House. And we all pretend like this is just normal!?

My friend @DavidLat just published an email Paul Weiss chair Brad Karp sent to the firm. This excerpt is the most chilling. This is how constitutional republics die -- when rivals see a violation of fundamental rights not as an injustice, but as a business opportunity:

Love the FT, but not sure China can pivot to manufacturing at this stage ... "Xi’s government is pivoting towards more investment in cutting-edge technology and manufacturing, in part to steel itself for a more hostile geopolitical environment." 1/

This is what we're all up against. Incontrovertible facts are just no match for this fiction. In real life, George W. Bush enacted massive tax cuts, skewed to the wealthy, which to this day are costing us trillions and are a core reason why debt is rising.

If we’re being real, Trump’s incoherence is a corporate Rorschach. For some, yes, blabbering nonsense is a turnoff. For others, it’s a signal that he’s an empty vessel for corporate-tech policy. A willingly blank canvas. That’s exciting if you want White House influence.

Coates: Some of the words that were used by CEO’s to describe Trump after meeting with him: meandering, all over the map, doesn't know what he's talking about, could not keep a straight thought.

An important message from my old friend and colleague who ran the BLS a few years ago. The way to cut the deficit is not by starving the agencies that measure the economy or the budget. The deficit savings aren't even a rounding error, but good policymaking gets hamstrung.
William Beach@BeachWW453

BLS is taking a lot of heat for announcing that the CPS sample size will be reduced due to budgetary constraints. As the immediate past Commissioner at BLS, I'm here to tell you that BLS is not playing politics and that we are, indeed, losing the CPS because of poor funding and slow modernization. Congress can help fix CPS by demanding change and funding a better survey. During my tenure and particularly during the pandemic, we used Census and BLS unused travel and conference funds (as well as some Census 2020 funding) to plug the budget holes and vigorously pushed modernization as far as dollars would allow. Even so, response rates and operating costs continued to worsen. The survey's worsening plight is a tragedy: the Current Population Survey is one of the most important economic and social surveys conducted by the US government. That same government, however, has allowed this crown jewel of survey data to languish and sicken. It is not too late to save this program, but we are getting close to the point of no return. If you want the labor market and demographic data produced each month by the CPS, then step up and demand change in the survey and the funding to bring that change about.

To your credit, you have it partly right. The critique of Trump is that, yes, he *is* bad. Yes, he *is* evil. That doesn’t mean, however, that everyone who supports him is all bad, or that everyone who opposes him is purely good. That’s because Trump embodies the worst in *all* of us. For we are all human. Trump revels in and glorifies our worst human traits: self-absorption, greed, mendacity, vindictiveness, ignorance, and so much else. He embodies all that we should aspire, and teach our children, not to be. Worse yet, he gives permission for others to be their worst selves. And that is the ultimate danger he poses. He’s a threat to truth, honor, reason, and decency. And that’s mostly without regard to policy—remember, Trump’s party is the party without a policy platform—although it does have implications for policy. But those are secondary. First and foremost, Trump and Trumpism pose a moral test, not a political test. I hope and pray and believe that our nation will pass and survive it.
Truthoverchaos@Truthoverchaos

In some sense it makes sense. The lefts entire platform is Trump and all its supporters are evil. It’s a vulgar response and I don’t agree with it but the left is not engaging in any serious discussion about the election. It’s all propaganda about Trump and his supporters are evil, etc.

One chart on why congestion pricing is so important—45% of all American transit commuters live in the New York metro area, and 33% live in NYC proper. Like it or not, the MTA's transit policy is America's transit policy
