🚀 Takeaways LEC FPN controls intracellular iron levels and production of BMPs, crucial to stimulate hepcidin expression in hepatocytes. Increased LEC iron boosts BMP production, leading to higher hepcidin and lower systemic iron, even when iron stores are unchanged.

🔬 Why it matters? This study shows that liver endothelial cells (LECs) play an active role in hepcidin regulation, and adds a new layer to our understanding of iron regulation by showing that liver endothelial cells help sense and communicate iron status to maintain balance.

Last week the American Iron Community got the chance to meet at the East West Iron Club Meeting in Baltimore, hosted by Iqbal Hamza at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. The meeting was combined with the Red Cell Club in a 3-days marathon on red cell, heme and iron!
