I feel I was raised to be a good person,” yet confessed to being “corrupted by this world” and consumed by resentment toward life’s perceived wrongs. Westman’s mental and physical decline was profound. They described years of crippling depression and suicidal thoughts in the manifesto, worsened by self-inflicted health issues. Suspecting lung cancer from heavy vaping, they dreaded a lingering death, stating, “I think I am dying of cancer... I don’t want to throw my life away by rotting in a hospital bed.” This fear drove a desire to die on their own terms, merging despair with a fixation on violent acts. They admitted, “I am not well... haunted by these thoughts that do not go away,” aware of their actions’ wrongness but feeling powerless to stop. Before the attack, Westman uploaded videos to a YouTube channel (“Robin W”), removed by 11 a.m. ET but later shared via reuploads and transcripts. An 11-minute video showed them paging through a red notebook with Cyrillic hate messages, weapon diagrams, and a church sketch, which they stabbed while laughing and declaring, “I’m going to kill myself.” Their rifle, shotgun, and pistol bore inscriptions like “6 million wasn’t enough,” “Jew Gas,” “Kill Donald Trump,” “Where is your God?,” “Israel must fall,” “Nuke India,” and nods to shooters like Adam Lanza and Anders Breivik, revealing a contradictory ideological mix. Pride flags and anti-Christian symbols linked their gender identity to their anger, influenced by online spaces like 4chan. Westman, clad in black, barricaded church doors with 2x4s and shot through stained glass at worshippers. Despite no significant prior criminal record, the attack was carefully planned, shaped by online radicalization. Their manifesto closed with a plea: “Forget me and all that I am. Hold onto yourselves and your loved ones.” This tragedy underscores the devastating interplay of untreated mental illness, gender dysphoria, self-harm, and extremist influences, calling for greater compassion and intervention to prevent such heartbreak.
