.@BirdLifeTas today joins @RSPCATasmania in calling for the annual Tasmanian duck season to be cancelled, as recent counts show mainland waterfowl populations at crisis point - and with Tasmania a safe refuge for these birds.

.@RSPCATasmania calls for an immediate end to the wild duck hunt due to be held from March 4, or failing that, a rapid phase-out of this cruel and unnecessary practice.

Ruddy Turnstones are a central species in our long term monitoring program. While we don't target them in Victoria, we have a biannual catch expedition to King Island, TAS, to focus on these birds. We are very much looking forward to seeing them again in March!

#breaking Volunteer observers have now seen 62 wild #OrangeBelliedParrots at Melaleuca. That will probably be the total, bar some late arrivals. Better than 50 of last year but short of the predicted 77. It means that up to 130 died during winter which is very sad.

When did you last see them and how were they doing? Strong-billed Honeyeater, Dusky Robin and Blue-winged Parrot are Tasmanian birds that now meet the criteria for listing as threatened species under the new Action Plan for Endangered Birds.
