We say: Handing Federal environmental protection and oversight to the Tasmanian Government would amount to a massive helping hand for it to push more species to extinction.

.@BirdLifeTas today joins @RSPCATasmania in calling for the annual Tasmanian duck season to be cancelled, as recent counts show mainland waterfowl populations at crisis point - and with Tasmania a safe refuge for these birds.

.@RSPCATasmania calls for an immediate end to the wild duck hunt due to be held from March 4, or failing that, a rapid phase-out of this cruel and unnecessary practice.

Hot off the press. Powerful owls exposed to second generation anticoagulant rodent poisons. Likely a case of accidentally poisoning of possums with rat poison then ending up in owls. We need to rethink how we use these poisons. sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

Thanks @theadvocatetas for the news story on our #Ramsar event this Thursday. @BirdLifeTas @UTAS_ "People who've done well in the community - we recognise them. Similarly for our outstanding national environment, we need to recognise it where it is due." theadvocate.com.au/story/7540228/

We think Tasmania is missing out on the valuable global recognition of #Ramsar listing for the Boullanger Bay wetlands, and we'd like you to know why. Come along to chat at Smithton on December 9. @RamsarConv @WetlandsInt

#breaking Volunteer observers have now seen 62 wild #OrangeBelliedParrots at Melaleuca. That will probably be the total, bar some late arrivals. Better than 50 of last year but short of the predicted 77. It means that up to 130 died during winter which is very sad.

When did you last see them and how were they doing? Strong-billed Honeyeater, Dusky Robin and Blue-winged Parrot are Tasmanian birds that now meet the criteria for listing as threatened species under the new Action Plan for Endangered Birds.
