Making a second brief return to twitter to report that @TBQuarterly sent me a (very nice!) rejection letter for a poem I wrote about tacos, which I am using as permission to just throw the thing on Medium along with several paragraphs of commentary @Birdbassador/objet-petit-t-a-poem-and-prose-reflection-on-the-shitty-taco-e91017cc4475" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">medium.com/@Birdbassador/…

@BUSSCRO is the number of truffles found inclusive of the ones eaten during the competition? what’s the margin of victory “on the books”: 12-8? 11-5? or do you get partial credit for truffles found but then observed having eaten? apologies if this is covered elsewhere

@Brakeman90 @Monster_Anatomy It was the one chain we never went to since my great aunt went to one at bit into a bullet in her sandwich

@jkohlmann trying to find that essay that made the comparison of the form "just like we look back at the 1910s with their radium patent medicines and think they were nuts for not regulating that poison, in the future they will similarly think we were nuts to use the internet like we do"

@paynushaver the grocery store had already started emptying candy from the “seasonal” aisle and putting full price christmas stuff in it on the 30th. we live in a world where even the smallest wins are taken from us

@JessicaHullman @sharoz I am half-tempted to make a “here’s what Steve is talking about with within-subject stats in VIS papers” RMD page somewhere because I think it’s an important issue (and base R doesn’t make it as trivial to do as you’d hope) that both I and others have screwed up periodically
English

For the record, I don't think @sharoz's skepticism is bashing the field unfairly. I think its healthy and warranted. 3/3
English

The responses to this thread bother me. I understand @sharoz pointing out stats issues in vis papers makes people uncomfortable. But when the response from senior leaders is essentially 'shut up & do something useful' what does it say about the field's orientation to truth? 1/

I've unfortunately found even more #ieeevis papers with major statistical irregularities beyond this thread. Some of the issues are possibly conclusion-altering. I don't have the time (or willpower) to look at them all. But you should be very skeptical of claims in any vis paper.

@AsMirry It is still wild to me that we’ve made a system where so much of our self-worth and professional prospects depend on whether we can get a small set of grumpy strangers to agree that we did a good enough job writing things down
English

@Birdbassador Isn't it also wonderful just to say I like this work and you did a good job? (In a rigorous manner)
English

@AsMirry I was considering just copy pasting something snippy in every review but that might not be the most worthwhile or helpful strategy. I went with “tweeting into the void” as a way to express displeasure without adding even more annoyances to everybody’s plate.
English

@Birdbassador It's tough. I just railed at the originality/significance and said yes is a small thing and not "Novel" but it'll change lives for the better and soon. So what's the metric?

Phenomenal. Bar-tailed Godwit has broken its own record: a first-year bird (five months old!) has flown 13,560 km—just shy of the direct flight limit of a Boeing 787—from Alaska to Tasmania, seemingly non-stop, in just 11 days (avg. speed: c.51 km/hr).
