Absolutely heartbreaking what happened in Bristol this weekend. 😔
A 35-year-old woman called Joanne Shaw was killed when her ex-partner Ryan Kelly turned up at her mum’s house early Sunday morning. He rang the doorbell and detonated a grenade right there on the doorstep. He died in the blast too.
She’d only recently moved there to get away from his harassment. Neighbours said she was trying to start over. Police had been called to the house just minutes before it happened. The whole street had to be evacuated.
This is every domestic abuse victim’s worst nightmare. It’s terrifying how quickly things can escalate.
My thoughts are with Joanne’s family and everyone who lives on that street and had to go through this. RIP Joanne 🙁
If you’re in an abusive situation, please reach out for help and don’t suffer alone.

A grumpy man can control a family without ever raising his voice. He just has to make his displeasure expensive enough. A long silence at dinner. A ruined car ride. Soon, everyone starts pre-adjusting. The kids are told “not now” before they can ask. She chooses the restaurant he likes, the movie he won’t complain through, the route that avoids traffic because traffic makes him unbearable. This is how a household becomes organized around one person’s refusal to regulate themselves.

Families tend to cater to the most dysfunctional person in order to keep the peace... But the only person's peace they're keeping is the one causing the problems.

“She sat at the back and they said she was shy,
She led from the front and they hated her pride,
They asked her advice and then questioned her guidance,
They branded her loud, then were shocked by her silence,
When she shared no ambition they said it was sad,
So she told them her dreams and they said she was mad,
They told her they'd listen, then covered their ears,
And gave her a hug while they laughed at her fears,
And she listened to all of it thinking she should,
Be the girl they told her to be best as she could,
But one day she asked what was best for herself,
Instead of trying to please everyone else,
So she walked to the forest and stood with the trees,
She heard the wind whisper and dance with the leaves,
She spoke to the willow, the elm and the pine,
And she told them what she'd been told time after time,
She told them she felt she was never enough,
She was either too little or far far too much,
Too loud or too quiet, too fierce or too weak,
Too wise or too foolish, too bold or too meek,
Then she found a small clearing surrounded by firs,
And she stopped...and she heard what the trees said to her,
And she sat there for hours not wanting to leave,
For the forest said nothing, it just let her breathe"
