Good luck, God bless, and farewell to Craig Pohl, Chair of our Department of Evangelization and Catechesis, who departs the Diocese of Lansing today after 14 years of faithful and cheerful service. Craig leaves with my prayers and gratitude. I wish him every blessing as he embarks upon ventures new.

There are many worthwhile messages that we can derive from today’s great Marian feast, but two seem particularly pertinent to me. First, God sends His Son to be one of us, to be with us, and to free us from sin and evil. He didn’t have to do that, but He did — all out of His boundless love for you and for me. Second, God sends His Son to be a member of a family — in this case, the family of Joseph and Mary. This reminds us of the pivotal importance that the family plays in the story of salvation. As Pope Saint John Paul II once memorably said: “As the family goes, so goes the nation and so goes the whole world in which we live.” Happy feast day!

"Thy people now exiles on many a shore, Shall love and revere thee till time be no more. And the fire thou has kindled shall ever burn bright, Its warmth undiminished undying its light." From Hail Glorious Saint Patrick by Sister Mary Agnes McSweeney (1823–1905)

Welcome to the latest installment of my exploration of Saint Paul's engagement with the Church in the city of Corinth in southern Greece. The challenges that Paul faced in evangelizing, and then shepherding, this community are similar to those we face today. Hence, we can learn many lessons from this fascinating episode in early Christian history. Today: Saint Paul and the Sunday collection.

"In all that concerns the king, I will be slavishly obedient; if any attack his temporal power, I will shed my last drop of blood for him. But in the things of spiritual jurisdiction which a king unjustly seizes I cannot and must not obey." Saint John Ogilvie (1580 – 1615), Scottish Jesuit priest and Reformation martyr. Before the rise of Christianity, the classical world was divided on the issue of the resurrection of the dead. Judaism did not believe in a real life after death until the period just before Christ, and even then the Sadducees opposed this belief in their disputes with the Pharisees. As for the pagans, many of them already believed that life continued in some way after death, but not in the body. The body was a prison to be abandoned to be truly free. In light of Christ's death and resurrection, Saint Paul clarifies the issue for the early Church in Corinth. Watch to find out what Paul had to say.
