As far as I remember, NATO exists to defend allies when Article 5 is invoked — meaning when a member state is actually attacked. The only country that has ever invoked Article 5 was the United States after 9/11. And NATO allies answered that call. British, Canadian, German, Australian and many other soldiers deployed to Afghanistan. Many were killed. Many were wounded. Funny enough, we were later told — including by Trump himself — that America “basically did Afghanistan alone” and that the allies were just “safe behind the lines.” Then came Iraq, which was not an Article 5 situation either — yet countries like the UK and others still joined the coalition. Now suddenly NATO is supposed to collapse because members are reluctant to jump into a war where no NATO ally has been attacked and where the United States and Israel launched the first strikes based largely on the claim of a nuclear threat that was supposedly already eliminated months ago?
