That stat alone doesn’t tell you anything. For instance, if out of 250M working age Americans there are 4 people out of work which makes one not able to get a job over 6 months. I’m not saying this is the case, however, you need to look at what percentage of working age people are out of work and looking for a job and compare that to the average over time.

@_SFTahoe I got my dad one 18 months ago for the same reason. It took him a while to get used to using it. Now he uses FSD every drive. He just bumps it up or down from Chill -> Standard -> Hurry using the button on the steering wheel.

I will never have to take my Dad’s car keys away. That was a moment I was dreading. Such a relief! Dad just ordered a Tesla Model Y Performance and purchased Full Self Driving (FSD). Night driving already isn’t his favorite - now the car will drive him. Never have to take away your parents keys too: Have them Buy a Tesla, the car that drives itself. Through February 14th they can buy FSD outright with a one-time purchase, after 2/14 FSD is available by monthly subscription. (My sister also bought a new Model X Plaid to own FSD prior to the deadline).

@Kristennetten My parents ordered the same one in red a little over a year ago and have been using FSD consistently now for four months. It gives me and my sister peace of mind that we won’t have to worry about taking their car away as they’re getting older.

I don’t think people need to know about FSD. They only need to know about Robotaxi when they get to their city. It doesn’t sound like you’re having any problems so far with utilization of the Robo taxis they currently have. I’m guessing that eventually it might be an issue, but I’m wondering if the approach that Chick-fil-A used when they came to town of mailing out a coupon for a free chicken sandwich would be more cost-effective?

Exactly… since Tesla’s long-term goal isn’t to sell FSD, it is the sell rides, why would they invest in selling people unsupervised autonomy at this point? In fact, when they gave away FSD free for 30 days the first time, it worked against them because the experience was not great yet.

It’s the opposite. Advertising is a long-term investment - it rarely works short term. $TSLA needs to educate consumers why they should want FSD. FSD will never be in high demand unless TSLA invests the time to teach consumers what they can do with unsupervised autonomy. If TSLA doesn’t do it, someone else ( likely $GOOG) will spend the time educating consumers and then they will own unsupervised autonomy.

If the goal was to maximize profit over the next couple quarters then I would agree with you. The primary goal right now is not to sell FSD, it is to get FSD trained to the point that unsupervised FSD can be rolled out worldwide and then to sell rides by the mile. In fact, selling supervised FSD is a risk at this point. One really bad accident could slow everything down.

Steve - I never suggested that a single 2010 Super Bowl ad ad caused $GOOG market share growth over the past 16 years. I was pointing out that other great products with strong word of mouth still invest in advertising to educate consumers about product benefits. You still haven’t explained why $TSLA FSD take rate is stuck in the mid-teens.

@garyblack00 So Tesla has handily beat the competitors in the 2 most important categories, cost and scalability but you don’t see that marketing isn’t solvable? Some ideas to think about are how Uber got started, primarily through word of mouth.

AVs in the marketplace are turning out to be net positives in growing the overall economic pie. This is not the kind of technology that is going to replace. It’s going to augment. “We are seeing AVs on our platform at significantly higher utilizations than one piece standalone platforms based on the publicly available data. And the trips per vehicle are 30% higher. ETAs are better as well. “And then if you look at the partnerships that we are setting up, whether it's a partnership with Waymo or Nvidia or newest partner wabi or AV ride or Neuro and Lucid, which kind of have a production ready car out there, we expect to be in 15 cities by the end of this year and then expanding beyond that as well, which should actually increase kind of the wave of kind of the AV business that we're seeing behind us. So from a top line basis, we see AV as a net positive for the ecosystem in terms of margins.
