Uganda airlines ltd A national carrier is an economic growth enabler and without it for a country that’s landlocked is a total economic black out. Yes, it must be run professionally something we all must push for, for it to survival and I wish we had better way to communicate as a people. What we are seeing isn’t only a bad reputation for the airline but a very bad reputation for a country. We are all losers at the end of the end directly or indirectly. You can’t be air locked and landlocked at the same time and think you have an economy as a people, no way Kabisa! Just think about Ethopian airlines, it’s last annually turnover as an airline was usd 7bn that’s usd 2bn shy of what our total export value as a country which was usd 9.1bn in 2024/2025. That doesn’t include the value of goods and services it has influenced on the ground for Ethopia. Its cargo section alone services over 34 markets across the globe. When you visit Oromia region of ethiopia, you find close to 10k farmers under 15 cooperatives who simply supply agricultural products to Ethiopian airlines to export elsewhere in the world. I have visited many parts of ethiopia so am speaking from real experience not hearsay and will be shocked about how efficient Ethiopian airlines is when it comes to domestic flights. The time i flew across many Ethiopian regions, they had 21 tarmacked airports across the country and I flew to many, had tourism experiences. Because of Ethiopian airlines, Ethopia earns close to usd 500m from their exports annually from the US alone which is massive, you haven’t counted figures from tourism. There are only 2 primary reasons for a national carrier. 1- transport goods produced by say Uganda to other countries with better spending power on those goods. 2 - bring spenders also called tourists from countries with higher purchasing power of our services. With a national carrier, you study countries and you say oh saudis spend usd 6.6k per person per destination, let’s push for say 100k of them to come to Uganda. It maybe hard to convince to air Saudi but if we have your own airlines, we create that invincible road in the air for saudis to use while coming to uganda. A national carrier offers quick direct route into our own country and convenience in travel is a big factor. Ofcourse this follows marketing too. If you fly to the UK and have no marketing presence, tourists won’t know through osmosis. You have to have a clear marketing strategy in every destination you fly to for both your products and tourism!
