If a foreign drone hit just one U.S. refinery and caused a tiny plume of smoke, Washington would treat it as an act of war and start leveling countries. Putin? It happens a thousand times and he does nothing. WTFl does this guy know? How is it possible that trains are still shuttling diplomats into Kyiv, nightclubs are still open, and the Ukrainian state is still functioning with that much normalcy? How TF!? At this point, there are only two explanations that make sense: Either Putin knows there is a much bigger plan with a fixed date for execution, or Russia is far more constrained and inept than its supporters want to admit. Because the usual excuses no longer withstand scrutiny.

Rhodesian troops in the Bush War used a kind of reconaissance by fire known as "Drake shooting". Instead of waiting for the enemy to reveal themselves, troops would proactively shoot into likely hiding spots: bases of trees, rocks, thickets or anthills. The goal was to kill concealed insurgents without first needing a clear visual on them. They didn't waste ammo. Riflemen fired "double taps" or controlled semi-auto shots up to 12 inches off the ground. This targeted legs and feet or ricocheted debris upward into the enemy's face and body. If the enemy flinched, moved, or returned fire, it instantly revealed their position for accurate follow-up shots. This was a very effective counter-insurgent tactic for the terrain they were fighting in.

Vietnam and Rhodesia are the same historical pattern. Indeed, a lot of professional mercenaries fought in both. I watched a BBC news story on the Rhodesian Bush War from 1978. The media was absolutely not neutral in this war. The reporter basically claims that the war is impossible to win because it's an insurgency and you can't beat the Maoist strategy of insurgents hiding amongst the civilians. Its exactly the same as Walter Cronkite in Vietnam. Saying the war is impossible to win because its an insurgency. This becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. And its absolute crap. These wars were not lost on the battlefield and they were not lost in the "hearts and minds" of the civilian population. When London or Washington want an enemy population to be actually defeated, they can certainly do it. The results of these wars were entirely decided by higher level politics that had nothing to do with the battlefield.

Rhodesian Fire Force tactics would be hard to replicate in any other context. You had guys dropping from aircraft at 500 feet or less, or disembarking from helicopters onto the ground, within small arms range of the enemy, in highly irregular terrain. Then inflicting lopsided kill ratios of up to 1000 : 1 in a vertical envelopment. The guerrillas they were fighting were inept and would basically try to target civilians. They knew that if a Fire Force dropped on them they couldn't win, they would just scatter. That's why the whole point of the Fire Force was trapping them in a pocket. The 4-man sticks in the Allouette helicopters would drop in to set up a perimeter and prevent them from escaping. It's a very dangerous and complex maneuvre.
