Few Dungeons & Dragons players have been able to complete this challenge in a campaign.

Working on an essay for publication about the need to remove politics from genre fantasy. It strikes me that much of the art of the genre (in the new D&D books) has shifted away from traditional heroic exploits into a sort of cozy-core, distinctly feminized aesthetic, with as much forced diversity as they can manage. Don't get me wrong. I'm all for kick ass women and pretty men. Yet I note that much of the art, not all, has a distinct flavour of emasculation. I say this as a not very masculine man. The 'representation' feels excessive in relation to how many of these types of relationships actually exist, as well as excessive in the switching of traditionally male roles and traditionally female roles. I use Elric as the 'Fantasy Then' figure because he has a somewhat androgynous appearance. He is quite a beautiful figure, almost fey in the feminine aspects of his form. Yet he is still a masculine character. Heroic. Bold. He embodies traditionally masculine traits. Also the art by Brian LeBlanc here is excellent. And no, rightists, the answer to this is not to shove the opposite politics into the genre. #TTRPGs #TTRPG #OSR #Art #Writing #Fantasy #DnD #5e
